Adam and Eve are our original parents. Got that. But what about the great flood? God killed everyone off except, Noah, his wife, his sons and their wives. So we all descend from Noah and his family? Just trying to wrap my brain around this concept. Thank you!

The Church does not teach that the flood was global. From the Biblical evidence, it looks like a local flood.

Among the people I know, the only ones that believe the flood was global are Protestants - and there aren’t many of them. Most Protestants also believe the flood was local.

Wow! I didn’t know that. I am a convert and I was taught in Sunday School that when the great flood happened, it was global. Learned something new today. Thanks. I was wondering about that too.

I understand - I was raised Protestant, too. I still remember an aunt getting us all excited about Noah being our great-great-great-etc. grandfather. 😉

Actually, the biblical evidence leaves the question open. One may believe either way (local or global) or even that the event was allegorical. It seems that the truth contained in it was the destruction of all people except the few who were faithful.

The story of Noah is the third creation story.

The flood really isn’t important. If you look at the first and second creation stories you will see clear parallels in the story of Noah - God gives them specific foods to eat, God gives a hierarchy to creation, God blesses, God comissions, and God creates things new.

The idea is a third creation.

I don’t know how you’re supposed to get “local flood” from the text when it says that the waters rose over the tops of mountains. It’s pretty specific.

Please be careful of sweeping statements like these because it suggests that the Church then teaches the opposite of said assertion.

Many of the ECFS have taken the global flood as literal as Adam and Eve!..and ALL Catholics - for a time - understood it to be so! The Prots may comment on it more often in your circle but that is not to say that Catholics o/s the U.S hold with the ECFS and common knowledge of Catholicism pre-20th Century.

It is not a matter that the Church has had to turn Her attention to define in one way of the other, but it is as IMPORTANT as Adam and Eve to most - and Catholics are free to line up behind whatever ‘thought’ takes their fancy! - for the moment.

Did you notice that I said “among the people I know”? I know better than to make statements about what people I don’t know think or believe. My statement about the Biblical evidence is my opionion. Must I preface every opinion with “IMO?” This forum is a hotbed of opinion. I never assume that a statement is anything other than opinion unless another source is cited.

Noah was a descendant of Adam and Eve. And if were are descendants of Noah, we’re also descendants of Adam and Eve.

  • St. Peter and Christ Himself in the New Testament confirmed the global Flood of Noah. It covered all the then high mountains and destroyed all land dwelling creatures except eight human beings andall kinds of non-human creatures aboard the Ark (Unam Sanctam, 1302)
  • The historical existence of Noah’s Ark is regarded as most important in typology, as central to Redemption. (1566 Catechism of the Council of Trent)

Does anyone know if there is any historical evidence that the flood ever happened? Trying to understand if I should take the story literal or not.

I think was a local flood myself. My brain just cant grasp two of every animal fitting on an arc of that size not to mention noah didnt even know every species of animals that existed on teh earth. He knew nothing of the American continents for example so how would he get animals from there? And even if God sent them like some argue the ark just wasnt big enough for everything.

Read the relevant passage carefully, you may see that it was NOT every animal that WE NOW HAVE, but the ‘kinds’ that gave rise to them. Everywhere in the world now is populated by those that came out of the Ark, including the Americas (now) and the Australian and Asian continents - which have unique species not found anywhere else!

You do not need to go get them if God ‘gathered’ towards Noah that which He meant to be aboard! From memory it wasn’t two of every species, but 7 plus 7, and 2of each kind…or something like that.

Assuming that the material/physical earth is what is meant by the “third creation”…?

Adam, as the first real human being, has a status all his own. Material foods which nourish the material anatomy are common. Adam is the one and only original.

😃 🙂 😃

In the year 2013, the Lord came unto Noah, Who was now living in America and said:
“Once again, the earth has become wicked and over-populated, and I see the end of all flesh before me.”
“Build another Ark and save 2 of every living thing along with a few good humans.”

He gave Noah the blueprints, saying:
“You have 6 months to build theArk before I will start the unending rain for 40 days and 40 nights.”
Six months later, the Lord looked down and saw Noah weeping in his yard - but no Ark.“Noah!,” He roared, “I’m about to start the rain! Where is the Ark?”

“Forgive me, Lord,” begged Noah, “but things have changed.”
“I needed a Building Permit.”
“I’ve been arguing with the Boat Inspector about the need for a sprinkler system.”

“My homeowners association claim that I’ve violated the
Neighborhood by-laws by building the Ark in my back yard and exceeding the height limitations. We had to go to the local Planning Committee for a decision.”

“Then the City Council and the Electricity Company demanded a shed load of money for the future costs of moving power lines and other overhead obstructions, to clear the passage for the Ark’s move to the sea. I told them that the sea would be coming to us, but they would hear none of it.”

“Getting the wood was another problem. There’s a ban on cutting local trees in order to save the Greater Spotted Barn Owl.”
“I tried to convince the environmentalists that I needed the wood to save the owls - but no go!”

“When I started gathering the animals, PETA took me to court. They insisted that I was confining wild animals against their will. They argued the accommodations were too restrictive and
it was cruel and inhumane to put so many animals in a confined space.”

“Then the Environmental Protection Agency ruled that I couldn’t build the Ark until they’d conducted an environmental impact study on Your proposed flood.”

“I’m still trying to resolve a complaint with the Human Rights Commission on how many minorities I’m supposed to hire for my building crew.”

“The Immigration Dept. Is checking the visa status of most of the people who want to work.”
“The labor unions say I can’t use my sons. They insist I have to hire only union workers with ark-building experience.”

“To make matters worse, the IRS seized all my assets, claiming I’m trying to leave the country illegally with endangered species.”
“So, forgive me, Lord, but it would take at least 10 years for me to finish this ark.”

“Suddenly the skies cleared, the sun began to shine and a rainbow stretched across the sky.”

Noah looked up in wonder and asked, “You mean you’re not going to destroy the world?”

“No,” said the Lord. " The Government beat me to it."

Hi Buffalo! That is a great modern day version of Noah! Loved it! Do you mind if I copy it?
