I live with my sister and she has a daughter. Her daughter is 13.
My niece is very attached to her pets. She has had several pass away recently to old age.
A dog, a goat, and a rabbit. My sister and I also have a childhood dog buried back in the woods along with my niece’s pets.
My niece says she needs closure and would like to “bless” her pet’s area in the woods. She was looking up different prayers and she really liked a few pagan/wicca poem/prayers.
She is catholic, as am I, and my sister too. Are there any Catholic prayers my niece can say to “bless” that area, or to give her the closure she needs?
The pagan/wicca “prayers” are :
1.)
Faithful friend, loyal companion,
we say farewell to you now.
You have kept us warm at night,
protected our home
and offered us unconditional love.
For this we are thankful,
and we will remember you forever.

2.)
In days gone by, the dog ran wild, untamed and free.
Although man may have tamed your bodies,
we have never tamed your spirit.
You are free now.
Go and run with your pack,
with your wild ancestors, racing by the midnight moon.
Go and hunt for your prey,
taking what is your birthright.
Join the wolf, the jackal, the wild dogs,
and run with your kin on the wild hunt.
Run, and guide your spirit home.

3.)
I have loved you from the day you came into my life,
and now it is time for me to let you go.
I could not watch you suffer,
I could not see you in pain.
Now you are free.
Your body is no longer sick,
or weak, or hurting.
Now you can run with the others,
playing and hunting as wild things do.
Because I loved you,
I had to let you go.
You will live forever in my heart.

Thank you, in advance.

DON’T LET HER PRAY WICCA PRAYERS.

Psalm 23 (it never hurts to let her read the Bible) : )

A psalm of David.
1 The LORD is my shepherd, I lack nothing.
2 He makes me lie down in green pastures,
he leads me beside quiet waters,
3 he refreshes my soul.
He guides me along the right paths
for his name’s sake.
4 Even though I walk
through the darkest valley,[a]
I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.
5 You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
6 Surely your goodness and love will follow me
all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the LORD
forever.

I’m not too familiar with wicca. What is it exactly?

and thank you for the bible piece 🙂 it is greatly appreciated

You’re welcome.

Wicca is also known as Witchcraft, a brand of neopaganism, that uses “magick”. It’s dangerous for Christians to pray wiccan prayers.

Get some holy water and sprinkle it on the ground while saying “God Bless this ground,” or something similar. Recite the 23rd Psalm. Say the Our Father.

A comforting poem is the Rainbow Bridge.
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together…

sorry, but if youre finding fault with the innocus “prayers” listed that silly “rainbow bridge” certinally shouldnt pass either.

Teach children to respect their own faith tradition. Invite a priest and have him say Franciscan blessing.

99% of this “wiccan” stuff is watered down catholocism with intrest in asian, roman, celtic and native American faiths. Many of the participants are fallen away Catholics with a chip (usually deserved) against the faith for some reason or another.

You may think the “rainbow bridge” is silly, but it has brought great comfort to my boys, myself, and friends of mine who have lost pets. 😉

Sorry. But the op is about a child who wants to use “wiccan” prayers. The rainbow bridge is in no way Catholic affirming and if you read the two posts side by side…i’d of guessed that the rainbow poem was wiccan.

If the whole point is to steer a child away from pagan ideas (which im not commenting on either way) then the poem is a bad idea.

Please do not allow that girl to recite wiccan prayers. I know a few wiccans and it is impossible to mention God in front of them without their becoming angry and offended by you. Remember to pray to false gods is sinful and satan is an opportunist as well as a pedophile.Do not open a door for him to attack this child. Also it would be a very good idea to find out where this child has found this wiccan recitation and guide her in the opposite direction of what is influencing her.
Remember all creation comes from God and He will restore all that is His back to himself. Perhaps biblical reading of the lion laying down with the lamb and 23rd psalm would show this girl that God loves all His creatures. And what about the sparrows that labor not. not one sparrow would fall to the ground unless our Father did not permit it.

Me Too! I’m not a kid but I’d like to think that the animals we have had will go home to God too. I heard God put in a doggie door by the pearly gates. 👍

Just for clarification not all Witches are Wiccan, but all Wiccans are Witches.

I recommend the following sources:

God’s Creatures Great and Small small prayerbook by Judith Bauer

Catholic Household Blessings and Prayers (USCCB)

but if you don’t have time to hunt down a book, just use Psalm 104. 🙂

What exactly makes those prayers wiccan? No mention of the goddess or whatever. I think one could take any one of those and reword it so it was Catholic. The first and third are the easiest to rewrite, I think. Thanking God for his little creatures, acknowledging our responsibility as stewards of his creation with a nod to St. Francis could be a start.

I wouldn’t recommend it. Why would you want to make it seem ok for her to use wiccan prayers? It seems a little bit strange to me, when we already have prayers for that purpose.

If you tell her it’s ok to re-word them to make them more “catholic”, it makes it seem, to her, like there is little difference between wicca and catholicism, which is blurring the lines.

It’s a bad move for an impressionable young girl.

**Again, what is Wiccan about them? **They seem more non-religious than pagan. I will give that #2 leans more that way but barely.

Catholics have been 'baptising" pagan stuff from the beginning. I have more of a problem with lay people going into the woods to bless the area kind of like they are priests consecrating an area for a holy use. That’s not what they are doing, though and I understand the need for closure. Therefore, making up some prayers using some non-religious words from another source as a launch pad is no more problematic than main intention.

There is no problem with reading from the bible. Why would you re-purpose a wiccan prayer, though? The girl was the one who looked them up. She obviously saw them on a wiccan website. Why would you want to make that ok by just re-wording them a bit? That’s wrong, and that makes it seem to the girl like wicca and catholicism compatible, when they are not. I would not touch the prayers. For that matter, the girl needs to stay away from their websites. It’s a danger to her soul.

You act as though wicca is innocuous, when it’s really a tool of evil. Besides, you should never pose a prayer talking to a dead animal. It’s DEAD. They have no immortal souls. These prayers are meant to “talk” to the soul of the animal, which goes against Church teaching. Who are they talking to then? I don’t want to find out.

Go with reading the psalms. I said nothing about blessing the ground, only about reading the bible. She isn’t acting the part of the priest. It’s an animal, for goodness sake. It’s not wrong, and she’s not blessing.

Of course they do, really. I am sure the dogie door is for cats too.

The first prayer appears innocuous enough and I would not have thought it Wiccan. Before you have more here jumping on you, go to a Fransican site on blessing of the animals and related prayers. You will find what you and your niece need there. I am not sure what you mean about blessing the area, does your niece want to say goodbye and a prayer of thanksgiving and farewell? God protects all his creatures.

BTW, I believe animals go to heaven. The Church has no position on this.
