Question about "porn" / "pornography"

Just for the sake of reference in the future or whatever

I know it is a sin, but …

what I’m not sure of is if it is a mortal or venial sin…
I was asking another person about it (also Catholic), and said it was a venial sin.

errr… >.> which is it [either way I’m going to try to not look at it if possible (in the future)…though just for reference I would like to know if it is or not. as I’m not sure about whether it’s a mortal or venial, and I would like to know, so I can 1) tell that other person that it is/or not 2) …well either way try not to…but if it is a mortal one…to try extra extra extra… hard to not do it after I find that information]

that’s all…

mainly the question is if looking at porn = venial or a mortal sin

EDIT: note: if possible, please reply…fast >.>…the sooner…I find out, the better…
 
Pornography is grave matter.

If you know it’s wrong and do it anyway, you’re in mortal sin.

Go to confession and get help, because science is beginning to show porn is almost as addictive as cocaine.

I already can stop myself from doing it. Especially with the fact that I find out now that it is a mortal sin.

Note to self: tell that person about the real thing…

I stop myself by thinking of something I’m going to do for my fansubbing (subtitling), or website, or something about an anime…like the opening song…

I was only just finding out if it was a venial or mortal sin.

I “knew” it was wrong, but I didn’t think it was a grave matter or anything like that was that much (mainly cause of the reason the other person gave me but…yet…)

hmmm? really? I guess I’m not an addict to that however…

[reason I had to ask, was because when I was looking around, I only found information about that it was a sin, but didn’t know that it would be a MORTAL sin, so now I know, note to self, don’t do it :)]
 
Pornography is a mortal sin yes.

Remember what christ said?

‘anyman who looks at a woman in lust has committed adultery with her in his heart’

whether you do the actual act itself or not, lusting is a mortal sin.

These posters are all right, do not open that door. On Catholic Answers Live radio show yesterday, they made a good point that the devil cannot tempt you to do anything you do not allow him to. But if you open that door to temptation, you will be letting him in and bringing in some serious sin.

All you have to do is read some of the past threads regarding how guys are trying to give up porn and it’s powerful pull to realize how destructive this sin can become in one’s life.

Yes. One must always consider that no act in and of itself is a mortal sin unless one knows (full knowledge) that the act is serious matter and so chooses (complete consent) to do it anyway. So, is viewing pornography a mortal sin? It very well can be…teachccd
 
Truthfully I’ve never seen a problem with porn.
  1. It is educational -showing you how to pleasure your partner.Introducing you to new types of sex
  2. It involves no pregnancy
  3. No STDs
  4. No telling a girl you love her just to get sex
  5. Men know that if you don’t have a sexual release then it drives you crazy, Porn is just a visual aid to a natural process.
Just being honest.
 
pornography objectifies women to lowest common denominator…and objectifies the sexual act as ordinary, common and out of the context of covenant marriage. IMHO this is why it is a grave sin. It takes the “human” out of people.

And if your mother, sister, daughter or any female in your family were to be in a pornographic picture or movie for men to gratify themselves with, would that be alright?? These young women are someone’s daughter, sister, and so forth.

Pornogaphy is a disgusting degradation of a human being. It removes the soul of a person so that one may only see the body.

You state what it doesn’t involve but you fail to mention what it does involve. It involves young women to be abused sexually and emotionally. It involves in many cases underage girls and guys to be exploited for money. It invlolves emotional trauma so intense that many girls either commit suicide or get into heavy drug usage. It involves a life for these girls where they get STD’s and numerous other ailments to their bodies including physical abuse. It involves humiliation to the families of these guys and girls.

You are very immature to see porn as an “educational” way of finding techniques for your partner.

I am a man and I don’t need porn. You are very mistaken and I will pray for you. You are very, very immature and I am just being honest…teachccd :confused:

actually, technicallly evernyone is different, so something that attracts me to sin isn’t the same as, well yours. therefore, sometimes, that would mean, like what is happening, that I would be able to stop at lookng at porn…however I’ll have other problems with other sins that others might not have problem with.

I already gave it up, and feel no pull.
 
I agree up to a point, Faqcorner. It’s true that we may all be attracted to different temptations/sin, but the topic here is porn. Thus, if you open that door of temptation, you are allowing the devil to let that type of sin seep into your life. If this isn’t a serious temptation, and you can walk away from it, that’s great. But my point is, many men who start looking at porn casually, do end up with serious problems and even addictions.

Just a little friendly warning about playing with fire…

You are so right. Thank the good Lord that I am like you and have no desire to look at porn…Praise God!! BUT…I still have other struggles that I deal with daily. For these I use prayer and the Sacraments, especially Reconciliation and the Eucharist. I started praying the Liturgy of the Hours and this helps me in a big way…Keep up the good fight…teachccd 🙂
 
Anyone who thinks they can look at porn as defined above or even just erotic pictures of women without a problem is fooling themselves and Old Nick is just laughing his hinder off. I have been porn free for a little over forty years now and looking back I can say to anyone, that is not a place you want to go.My excuse was exactly like the list posted by one of the fellas above about all the “benefits”.

It starts out nice and easy. Kind of interesting and fun. Yeah, I could handle that stuff and learn a lot. As time passed I got to a point where just seeing a picture of a nude would make my heart pound and my breath to come in gasps. The pull to keep looking was unimaginable to anyone who has not been there. It took a combination of psychological counseling and a good confessor and lots of night sweats to beat the addiction. It can be beaten, but better to not go there in the first place. The Jesuits taught me about a concept called control of the eyes. It helped a lot.

been there done that is my comment to the first part…would you be as so kind to share with us this concept you recieved from the Jesuits…it would benifit many here .my self included.it is a good thing we don’t take Jesus"s words about plucking one’s eye out or cutting off one’s hand if it causes one to sin.cause if this was the case there wouldn’t be anything left of me to attend mass:o
 
Porn is hell. I feel just as St. Paul does in Romans 7:15: I cannot understand my own behaviour. I fail to carry out the things I want to do, and I find myself doing the very things I hate.

Also keep in mind that the actors (women and men) in pornography are also committing grave sins. Pray for them.
 
Remember there is nothing out there that with God you cant over come. God told us that. Just ask him he will help. Trust God more than anything he will help you. Remember the devil know our weaknesses and will do everything in his power to tempt us. But God can beat him. My Dad always said no matter what, the devil works on weaknesses, just keep Saying In the Name of Jesus Christ devil get away from me. Keep saying it. I swear to you it works, it takes time but it works, the devil will run like hell, he is scared to death of Jesus.

due to my past(and unfortunately present which thankfully now very little) financial contributions and my desire for porn i pray Forgive those Father who i caused to sin or to take part in my sins now and in the past.Show unto us your loving mercy and grant us the Grace to reach to your Son Jesus for forgiveness,So that we may live to love and serve you for all enternity. amen.
