Question about praying for purgatory stuff

So purgatory, from my teacher, was when people needed to go to that place to purify their love or something? thats what the church teaches? if so then why do they get out early if we pray. if we pray and they get out early their love is not pure because they arnt ready to fet out. and The Lord doesnt just send em there for no reason. He sends them there for a reason. How can we say then that we can pray for them to get out early then

Purgatory is the final purification that makes us perfect so we can be in the eternal presence of God. The reason our prayers and suffering are beneficial to them is because we are of the same body. (cf 1 Cor 12:25-27, 2 Cor 1:6-7, 1 Pet 4:8, etc…). The power flowing through us is of course Christ’s.

III. THE FINAL PURIFICATION, OR PURGATORY

1030 All who die in God’s grace and friendship, but still imperfectly purified, are indeed assured of their eternal salvation; but after death they undergo purification, so as to achieve the holiness necessary to enter the joy of heaven.

1031 The Church gives the name Purgatory to this final purification of the elect, which is entirely different from the punishment of the damned.606 The Church formulated her doctrine of faith on Purgatory especially at the Councils of Florence and Trent. The tradition of the Church, by reference to certain texts of Scripture, speaks of a cleansing fire:607

As for certain lesser faults, we must believe that, before the Final Judgment, there is a purifying fire. He who is truth says that whoever utters blasphemy against the Holy Spirit will be pardoned neither in this age nor in the age to come. From this sentence we understand that certain offenses can be forgiven in this age, but certain others in the age to come.608

1032 This teaching is also based on the practice of prayer for the dead, already mentioned in Sacred Scripture: "Therefore [Judas Maccabeus] made atonement for the dead, that they might be delivered from their sin."609 From the beginning the Church has honored the memory of the dead and offered prayers in suffrage for them, above all the Eucharistic sacrifice, so that, thus purified, they may attain the beatific vision of God.610 The Church also commends almsgiving, indulgences, and works of penance undertaken on behalf of the dead:

Let us help and commemorate them. If Job’s sons were purified by their father’s sacrifice, why would we doubt that our offerings for the dead bring them some consolation? Let us not hesitate to help those who have died and to offer our prayers for them.611

We help eachother in this world by our prayers. No man of faith would deny that. Why should it be hard to imagine we can help someone in purgatory with our prayers and good works etc. Just because we can’t see them does not mean we can’t help them. They in turn can help us too. Don’t forget to ask favours of them in return.

well. I thought that purgatory was for a reason. but we can encourage them is what I thought was meant. but ya they can help by prayers too for us. was that what was meant?

My husband just died a couple months ago, and I have daily and sometimes hourly offered prayers for him, assuming he might be yet in Purgatory. A few times, I wondered if he would hear me if I prayed/talked to him? There is no doubt in my mind that a canonized saint hears our petitions and intercedes for us, but how should we believe with respect to those who are in Purgatory … specific persons, that is.

They may know if God permits them. But they will know someone helped them and I’m sure they will know once in heaven. Even if God does not reveal who helped them they can help the person who helped them.
