Question about promises to God

I decided to not play a computer game on Sundays, since it is the Lord’s day. However, my dad is working, my mom is asleep, my brother isn’t home, it’s really hot out, and my bro has the car so I can’t go anywhere. I’m bored and don’t have anything else to do between now and youth group at 6. I wouldn’t be breaking a promise to God by playing this game to kill time, would I?

Did you promise to God explicitly or only resolve within yourself not to? I’d say stick with your original intention. It’s the better option.

When you are ready for marriage or priestly vows will be time enough for promises to God. The only promise you have to worry about is those made at your baptism, to believe and obey the commandments. Don’t add to that load.

If you made a promise, then it’s important to keep it.

If it was not a promise, - I agree that it’s best not to make promises like these, unless it’s so completely out of love for God (and hopefully with the permission of a spiritual director) that it would not make us confused and scrupulous. Best to keep your spiritual life simple and joyful… as my priest would say don’t be afraid of making sacrifices to God, and if you decided on one, - do it, regardless of how you feel. But don’t make hasty promises, that would only complicate things and make you worry.

You have already previously told us you suffer from scrupulosity. You need to have a regular real-life person-- i.e. your priest or spiritual director-- to help you work through this.

No, you are not breaking a promise to God if you play a video game. There is nothing wrong with playing video games on Sunday or any other day of the week.
