If you die in a state of grace, your soul’s destination being purgatory depends on if you’ve already been completely purified of your mortal and venial sins while still on earth. You might have already paid sufficient penance for your sins while on earth and you might go directly to heaven. However, if you didn’t do sufficient penance to avoid purgatory all together, but are still in a state of grace, your soul will be purified in purgatory before it goes to heaven. Once you have been purified, your soul will go to heaven and you will wait with the rest of the saints for the general resurrection. If I today die in a state of grace, my soul goes to purgatory isn’t it? Then what if my cleansing in purgatory is finished before the second coming of Christ, does that mean my soul will stay in heaven for the meantime, as I wait for my body to be reunited with it?
Hope that made sense somehow.
I hope that answers your question.
