Question About Sin Uncertainty in Confession

In confession I did not confess to cheating on a college midterm because I thought it was a venial sin at the time. However, what if this was actually a mortal sin? Is my confession invalid because I did not confess it at the time, or should I treat it like a forgotten mortal sin and confess it next time?

If it’s bothering you, mention it in confession and don’t worry about whether it was venial or mortal.

I doubt your past confession was invalidated if you thought it was venial and just didn’t happen to mention it. There are all kinds of sins I didn’t mention in older confessions because I didn’t think they were sins, or didn’t think they were serious sins, at the time. I later (As in, many years or even decades later) found out they were grave matter and I just mentioned them in confession and said I hadn’t realized at the time they were grave sins, or in some cases, sins at all.

If you didn’t know it was a mortal sin…it was not. As others have said, bring it up in your next Confession if you’d like.

You have to know that something is grave matter for it to be a mortal sin. So no, this is not a mortal sin.
