I have been wondering what is the significance of the square cloth-covered board that is placed over the chalice during the Liturgy of the Eucharist. During the Eucharistic Prayer the priest will remove the board from covering the chalice and later replaces it over the cup, and I have never heard why this is done or what is the significance of it. Thanks.

It’s called a Pall. It’s a blessed, stiff square piece of linen, sometimes decorated with a cross or other embroidery. It’s used to cover the chalice to prevent impurities from falling into it.

Around here, Southern California, it is essential to keep fruit flies out. 😉

That’s right. But you don’t have to be in California to have pesty flies. In the summer time it is not unusual to see Father pick up the pall and put it over the chalice again until he gets to the consecration or after the consecration he will place the pall over the chalice while he distributes Communion. The reason- to keep that pesty fly out.out.

I have not seen a Pall used in years. How luck you are to have such an Venerable Parish. I miss that, I truly miss some of the respect that was shown in my youth.
