I have a friend who recently passed away and his last Mass was on Ash Wednesday at Our Lady of Grace Church in Kenner, LA which is Pastored by a priest of SSPX, someone told me that my friend’s confession as well as Communion were not valid because the priest is of the SSPX, could anyone shed light on this? I did look and did not see this church listed for the diocese of New Orleans. Thank you so much.

An SSPX priest can validly say Mass. A priest who is not in good standing with the Catholic Church can not validly hear confessions, as this sacrament requires faculties be granted from the Bishop. However, this particular confession may have well been valid since any priest, even a fallen away priest may hear confession and grant absolution when one is in danger of death.

Thank you so much for the information. My friend died suddenly so his confession was not a deathbed one, and I do not know what the situation is between the priest and the bishop is, but my friend told me that after his confession he literally floated to the Communion rail for Communion.

Is there something in the Canon about supplied jurisdiction though? 🤷

**Can. 969
**§1. The local ordinary alone is competent to confer upon any presbyters whatsoever the faculty to hear the confessions of any of the faithful.

The Ecclesia Dei commission had this to say about the marriages officiated by and the confessions heard by the SSPX priests:

Concretely this means that the Masses offered by the priests of the Society of St. Pius X are valid, but illicit i.e, contrary to Canon Law. The Sacraments of Penance and Matrimony however, require that the priest enjoys the faculties of the diocese or has proper delegation. Since that is not the case with these priests, these sacraments are invalid. It remains true, however, that, if the faithful are genuinely ignorant that the priests of the Society of St. Pius X do not have the proper faculty to absolve, the Church supplied these faculties so that the sacrament was valid (cf. Code of Canon Law c.144
).
