Question about St Barbara

My mother bought a beautiful antique medalion. It has a woman with a crown on her head. She is holding a sword facing down in one hand and a chalice in another. She looked in several books and St Barbara seems to fit this description in all the pictures (Mom is quite happy because her name is Barbara). What we cannot find is Why she has the crown, sword and chalice. Can anyone help me? Thanks a bunch!

She is legendary daughter of Dioscorus(a rich heathen) she wouldn’t marry a pagan so her father had her killed together with Julianna

Sshe is the patron saint of artillery and mining
The RCC did drop her from the liturgy in 1969 thinking she is more of a legend which means they don’t have her feast day listed in the missals.
They need lots of proof and I haven’t checked out Julianna history ither as they were together . I believe they both were definately martyrs and ministered to the injured.

Your Welcome, the saints lives are fascinating and there were many Barbaras and Santa Barbara in CA was named after her as the Spain were very influenced and prayed through her intercession much so she must have answered many prayers.
Another truly wonderful saint is St. Eliizabeth of Portugal.
She was a great martyr.
Another is St. Tersa Benedicta of the Cross
She was in the Nazi rgime and then preached against it and some jewish groups have challenged her bust is scheduled to be introduced into the Walhalla temple in Regensburg in 2008.
But this is from wiki not new advent, so there is even a video (watch it but it is in german (I think)great video but wish I could hear the translation) can’t wait to see what happens in 2008 and see what our Holy Father does on this celebration.

I am thinking Barbara is one of the saints who appeared to Joan of Arc, somebody help me out here.

This medallion may really be a Spanish antique I would have it appraaised if I were you. Just trying to help 🙂 It sounds interesing where did she buy it? You can go to a Catholic book store or try Barnes and Noble and get a prayer card with the prayer I listed or others. Dessert

What does the crown represent though?
Maybe it has something to do with the Spain, there form of Mary as the Hispanic love Mary of guedalopea I know I didn’t spell it right?
