Hello,

Is it acceptable on Sunday to practice driving, if one has recently gotten their driver’s permit, and would like to practice?

God bless

The Catechism’s teaching on this would make a good guideline for you.

2185 On Sundays and other holy days of obligation, the faithful are to refrain from engaging in work or activities that hinder the worship owed to God, the joy proper to the Lord’s Day, the performance of the works of mercy, and the appropriate relaxation of mind and body.123 Family needs or important social service can legitimately excuse from the obligation of Sunday rest. The faithful should see to it that legitimate excuses do not lead to habits prejudicial to religion, family life, and health.

2186 Those Christians who have leisure should be mindful of their brethren who have the same needs and the same rights,** yet cannot rest from work because of poverty and misery. *Sunday is traditionally consecrated by Christian piety to good works and humble service of the sick, the infirm, and the elderly. Christians will also sanctify Sunday by devoting time and care to their families and relatives, often difficult to do on other days of the week. Sunday is a time for reflection, silence, cultivation of the mind, and meditation which furthers the growth of the Christian interior life.

In a nutshell, there is nothing wrong with practicing your driving skills on Sunday. Stop and get ice cream afterwards.

My daughter used to practice driving anytime. She hit a sign, knocking it over so it looked crooked, and I would sit in the car, white-knuckled while I hoped for the best.

Fortunately she had driver’s ed at school.

i also think that it is not bad, as long as you have attended the Sunday Mass first.

I always have done my most praying while teaching my children to drive. 😃

Not to mention driving would allow you to assist your family and others in ways that the catechism specifically mentions.

Not to mention I’ve always found driving to be a peaceful and meditative time. Provided I’m not in rush hour traffic 👍

I’m curious

Why did you pick the Non-Catholic Religions forum to ask that question?

Hi!
…as Jesus stated the Sabbath (day of rest) was made for man not man for the Sabbath; Sunday is the Christian day of rest (the day in which our Lord Jesus Christ was Resurrected from the dead); it is a day of Celebration (Worship of Yahweh God and of rest–a day for man to relax and enjoy the life Given by God).

I would not rush through Sunday Mass or avoid it in order to work or “have fun.” Our day of rest must be centered on God first, then on ourselves; practicing your driving skill can be seen as an opportunity to gain a skill while enjoying a ride around town–just as long as you have first enjoyed your Sunday-time with God.

Maran atha!
