I told this joke, and afterwards was wondering if I sinned by saying the word that begins with an A and ends with two S. I never swear, so that’s why I was wondering. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

BTW, this is the joke:

An old man, a boy, and a donkey were on their way to town. The boy was riding the donkey.

As they went along, they passed a goup of people who remarked it was a shame the old man had to walk while the young boy was riding. The man and boy thought about the criticism and decided maybe the people were right, so they switched places.

Later they passed another group of people who remarked that it was a shame that the old man made the little boy walk. The two travelers decided that they would BOTH walk.

Soon they passed a third group of people who said they were stupid to walk , when they had such a fine donkey to ride. So, the two decided they would both ride the donkey.

The next group of people they passed said that it was AWFUL that the two put such a heavy load on the poor donkey. The old man & boy thought that maybe the people were right, so they decided to carry the donkey.

Soon they came to a river, with a narrow bridge spanning it. As they attempted to cross the bridge, they lost their grip on the animal & it fell into the river and drowned.

The moral of the story ?

If you try to please everyone, you may as well kiss your ***** goodbye.

:rotfl:

I do not swear and I can’t think of the last time I said that word.

But technically, that word means
a long-eared, slow, patient, sure-footed domesticated mammal, Equus asinus, related to the horse, used chiefly as a beast of burden.
I think it’s a cute play on words and not a big deal.

Equus asinus is a scientific classification. That is what the colloquial “" comes from. I suspect that you just wanted to tell your joke. Because thinking that your joke or your usage of the term could be sinful is ridicules.
Out of consideration for some of the people here, and from my general niceness, I am resisting the temptation to actually list examples of using the word "
” in ways that might be offensive to some. Just so you can tell the difference. You will have to use your imagination.

By the way, I did not edit out the common word for donkey. This sometimes excessively puritanical site did it for me. But I figure most people are smart enough to figure it out m

Since it means donkey, I would say no.

I actually think that it’s kind of funny. 😃

I swear far too much, constantly, in real life. It never occurred to me that swearing, in the sense of “using a foul word”, was, or even could be, a sin - just an uncouth habit - unless it was “swearing” in the original sense of violating the second commandment and taking the Lord’s name in vain (like many phrases including the Most Holy Name and the concept of Damnation do).

I’m trying to control the mighty tongue - A human appendage more powerful than a sword or a gun and with a mind of its own, Its a struggle for me because swear words are a common occurance in my work place and some times they just come out with great surprise to me - I find a lot of people use Jesus Christ alot and I cringe inside everytime I hear it used that way - its in the movies - TV and a common swear by lots of Christians - this one bothers me more than any other swear and I never say it.I even have told others to be aware and not to say it around me of course receiving scorn for saying so.

What do these people even mean when using it?I don’t get it or want to get it.

I curse far too much as well, I have a foul-mouthed teenage son who started up the profanity a few years ago and as with many things in life, one’s companions influence one’s behavior…But now I am stuck with my tongue’s habit…

As far as speaking the name of Jesus in a swearing context, I despise it. It is like GD, both of those are taking the Lord’s name in vain. Even saying “Oh my God” in the wrong context is disrespectful. I would rather hear the F word all day long than just one GD or “JC” spoken with disrespect. I tell my sons if you say His name, you had better be on your knees.crying out for mercy because you will need it shortly.

I always confess my cursing. If it’s not a sin, I don’t care, it’s a very bad habit and leads no one to Christ.

This is how I see it. Its not so much the word(though some words are horrendous), I feel its the emotion behind it. Saying sh-- or **** or shoot doesnt matter…you’re angry when you say it. I also see true cursing (as apposed to cussing) as wishing someone harm.

I wouldn’t judge even if I could (and I can’t, because being in the military has led me to having the mouth of a sailor), but that sounds a bit like letting the tail wag the dog…

unbelievers will know you by your actions and conversation. I once was interrested in a girl until she smoked and then I was turned off. So, the real question you should ask yourself did you lower your holiness standard when you told that joke.
