Coveting is the sort of feeling that leads to people being mugged for their Nikes.
If you want to have a house like one you admire, and you resolve to work hard and save up so you can afford it for your family, that’s not a bad thing.
If you’re so discontent because your house is nothing like the house you
really want that you’re losing sleep over it and feel depressed, that’s a bad thing.
If you’re so focused on getting a house like the house you admire that you put everything else on the back burner— God, your friends, your family, your balance in life— that’s a bad thing.
If you use your desires to inspire you to improve some part of your life, that’s a good thing. But if you allow your desires to cripple your relationships, or give them an inordinate place in your list of priorities, that’s a good hint that you’ve moved into coveting territory.
