Hi all!
I hope I am asking in the right place…but I was just curious…how would I get a catechism of my own?? Not to sound totally ignorant, but I guess there is a newer updated one from 1994, if Im correct??? Would I just go to a Catholic church to purchase one?? Thank you in advace for your help!
God bless!🙂

Local Barnes and Noble, Amazon.com - lots of regular book stores would carry it. Your parish may also have a stash of them for sale as well.

Thank you very much! What’s funny is that I was at Barnes and Noble today when it entered my mind to purchase one. I was looking for it back in the religion department where I noticed other Catholic material, and possibly just didnt really know exactly what to be looking for! lol! I will go back out there , and if I dont see it, I’ll just ask them!
👍

Here’s the link where you can buy it from amazon.com.

You can purchase one online from Ignatius Press, or any of a number of different online retailers. The ISBN is 1-57455-109-4 for the hard cover, or ISBN 0-385-47967-0 for the paperback, just google the ISBN #, and you’ll find lots of different retailers. The hard cover is a nice version to have because of the scripture references in the back.

You can also view it online @ the Vatican website.

God bless!

Thank you so much all of you for the help! I appreciate having the link to take a look at it online! Wow! I wouldve never thought that possible! I will want to get a hardback one like you were saying, if it has scripture references in it. I do have a book that has many references to the catechism, but Id really like to be able to sit and really go through it and understand what its all about!
:blessyou:

Most public librarys should have one; plus if you check the Yellow Pages (phone book) and look under bookstores, you will see Catholic Bookstores, many neighborhoods have one.

You are looking to buy the Catechism of the Catholic Church, 2nd Edition. While you are at it, please do purchase these other excellent catechisms if possible:

Catechism of the Council of Trent (very complex but it teaches the Faith)

My Catholic Faith by Angelus Press (193 chapters covering everything you need to know about the Catholic Church)

Baltimore Catechism (simple to understand; highly recommended)

The Catechetical Instructions of Saint Thomas Aquinas (complex)

Start with the Baltimore Catechism, it’s the clearest of them all - it’s straight to the point. *Highly *recommended.

Read the Current Catechism of the Catholic Church. You can find it on the United States Council of Catholic Bishops web site ON LINE…and read it at your leisure.

usccb.org/catechism/text/index.htm

IT is the clearest. The Baltimore Catechism is a question and answer format which doesn’t really go into depth.

I also like the Compendium of the Catechism, which is the 1994 Catechism in question-and-answer format. It also has all the formulae and lists that are recommended for memorization - it’s a great tool for teaching Catechism. 👍

Yes, if you want to go to bed tonight, absolutely sure that you are going to hell, read the Baltimore Catechism. 😃

thanks, Richie

Clearly you haven’t read any other catechism or you would realize the CCC is probably the most ambiguous catechism out there.
The Baltimore Catechism is a question and answer format which doesn’t really go into depth.
Once again, clearly you haven’t read Baltimore Catechism #4. It is actually more straight forward and goes far more in-depth than the CCC on many aspects of Church teaching. It’s far longer than the other three Baltimore Catechisms and is aimed at “Sunday-school teachers and advanced classes.” You can find it here:

tanbooks.com/index.php/page/shop:flypage_gr/product_id/49/

However, the Catechism I recommend more than any other out there, and I have read several in their entirety including the recent CCC, is this one:

tanbooks.com/index.php/page/shop:flypage_gr/product_id/409/

If you want something that’s not as “exhaustive” and a little simpler, you can’t go wrong with any of the Baltimore Catechisms (numbered 1 through 4, with number 1 being the simplest and shortest), the Catechism of Pope Saint Pius X, This Is The Faith by Canon Francis Ripley, or My Catholic Faith by Bishop Louis LaRavoire Morrow .

This Is The Faith can be found here, though it is temporarily out of stock (probably due to the fact that it is quite popular and is sold out):

tanbooks.com/index.php/page/shop:flypage/product_id/537/keywords/faith/

and My Catholic Faith can be found here:

Can you give us an example?
Well, I borrowed a copy, and after reading several pages, it became pretty clear that most of us are up the creek 😉

There was a part that said to the effect that if we even thought about having an impure thought about a girl that we passed on the street that we needed to go to confession, and other similar comments.

Pretty tough stuff. I can see why there is a newer version out.

thanks, Richie

My parish actually handed them out to any parent that wanted one at the start of CCD this year. IMO a very smart thing. Your parish might actually be very happy to hand one to you free of charge. (for which you could then hand them a little donation)

Well, unless you believe Jesus was a liar, then the fact that few will be saved is a core tenet of not only Catholicism, but Christianity in general. I’m talking about:
St. Matthew 7:13-14:
Enter ye in at the narrow gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way that leadeth to destruction, and many there are who go in thereat. How narrow is the gate, and strait is the way that leadeth to life: and few there are that find it!
Interesting to note this very verse is alluded to even in the recent CCC:
Catechism of the Catholic Church:
The affirmations of Sacred Scripture and the teachings of the Church on the subject of hell are a call to the responsibility incumbent upon man to make use of his freedom in view of his eternal destiny. They are at the same time an urgent call to conversion: “Enter by the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is easy, that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard, that leads to life, and those who find it are few.”
So it seems you’ll have to accuse not only the Baltimore Catechisms of such teaching, but the CCC and the Bible too.

Well, unless you believe Jesus was a liar,
That statement doesn’t accomplish anything other than to be needlessly confrontational.

I returned the book to the person I borrowed it from, before the wife found it, or she’d never let me set foot in a catholic church again.

I don’t dispute the bible or even the truths in the catechism, but the “delivery” in the baltimore catechism doesn’t exactly encourage anyone to want to convert or revert in my opinion.
