I thought it said somewhere in the Bible that the Church of the Lord would be prosecuted in it’s last days. So when I think about it the only Church I know that many secular people and many Christians alike have something against is the Catholic Church. So, that made me wonder if the Catholic Church really is the true church. I still don’t know but I find the Catholic faith interesting and so I’ve been exploroing it.

However I do have a question. I know what secular people have against the Catholic Church but why do other Christians sometimes call the Catholic Church the Whore of Babelon (sp??)?

Maria, they do so because of their misunderstanding of “Revelation” - a misunderstanding and misapplication bred through many centuries and thus taken as “gospel”. This article from “ThisRock” magazine addresses “the whore of Babylon”:

It is due to a mis-interpretation and mis-application of the term “whore of Babylon” found in the book of Revelation. As you may know that the last book of the New Testament is most mis-interpreted book of the Bible. Traditionally the term “Whore of Babylon” refers to Jerusalem of the 1st century a.d. or c.e… In Revelations the earthly Jerusalem is compared and contrasted with the heavenly Jerusalem which is the Church.

Again, simplest reason is mis-interpretation.

It is popular among anti-Catholics to refer to the Church as the Whore of Babylon.

What is interesting is that Jehovah’s Witnesses refer to the Catholic Church as the Whore of Babylon as well. But, since Protestantism derives from the Catholic Church, they quite logically call Protestantism the daughter of the Whore!

The original Protestant reformers needed justification for leaving the Catholic Church and establishing their own church-like communities. Unfortunately, the Bible tends to regard such people as antichrists:Children, it is the last hour; and as you have heard that antichrist is coming, so now many antichrists have come; therefore we know that it is the last hour. They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us; but they went out, that it might be plain that they all are not of us. (1 John 2:18-19)

Be that as it may and despite the numerous and clear Bible verses that say Babylon is a city (Revelation 16:19; 17:18; 18:10, 16, 18, 19, 21), they chose to twist Scripture (to their own ruin) in order to justify leaving the Catholic Church by identifying the Catholic Church with Babylon which the people of God are commanded to leave to avoid being destroyed with it: “Come out of her, my people, lest you take part in her sins, lest you share in her plagues; for her sins are heaped high as heaven, and God has remembered her iniquities…” (Revelation 18:4-5)

The case was made to me was from Revelation 17. The argument was that Rome is the city built on seven hills and the seat of the RCC that persecuted the reformers.

3So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns.
4And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet colour, and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication:
5And upon her forehead was a name written, MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH.
6And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus: and when I saw her, I wondered with great admiration.
7And the angel said unto me, Wherefore didst thou marvel? I will tell thee the mystery of the woman, and of the beast that carrieth her, which hath the seven heads and ten horns.
8The beast that thou sawest was, and is not; and shall ascend out of the bottomless pit, and go into perdition: and they that dwell on the earth shall wonder, whose names were not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, when they behold the beast that was, and is not, and yet is.
** 9And here is the mind which hath wisdom. The seven heads are seven mountains, on which the woman sitteth. **

On the OP:

You don’t think secular and religuous people hate Mormons (there were actual anti Mormon commercials in California over Prop 8), or Evangelicals, or Fundamentalists???

The truth is Christians and cults of different stripes “have something against” the other denominations over doctrine, practice, and history (or there would be no reason to be seperate).

and

The secular “have something against” anyone that holds to traditional social values.

But only the Catholic Church has been persecuted for 2,000 years

That some of us don’t believe the RCC has stuck to the same message (or correct message) for 2000 years is the purpose of this forum. 😉

sorry this one just don’t cut it though cause in the real world these hills are not visable any more and Vatican city is NOT built on all seven mounds…what is really intersting is that, there is a city in the USA built on seven hills.

One of the best treatments of this whole topic is Scott Hahn’s book “The Lamb’s Supper.” He is very easy to read and understand… with a touch of humor thrown in… and yet his knowledge and insight will blow you away! All of his books are amazing…he was a protestant minister and true Bible scholar who became Catholic. His conversion story is called “Rome Sweet Home,” also a great read. Anyway… “The Lamb’s Supper” will shed light on all of this for you… I hope that helps! Judie

If you don’t think so, then you haven’t read the writings of the Apostolic Fathers – the men who were taught by some of the Apostles themselves. They sound VERY Catholic.

Rome is the only city I know of in the whole world known as the “city of the seven hills”. I suppose a partial-preterist would have no problem with ancient Rome as the whore of babylon either.

What U.S. city?

Again for the OP’s questions about the Whore of Babylon and an explanation of the view (just found it googling “Rome Seven Hills”):

How do I lose? I answered the OP about where the RCC as the Whore of Babylon view comes from. I don’t think I espoused it on this thread.

Thanks for the info, I never heard of either of those (and I now live in Ohio). Though for dealing with Revelation 17, those cities obviously weren’t known to the writer of Revelation (John) or its first readers.

Thanks,
Tim

I dont think there is much dispute that the City in question is rome. The question is was this prophecy or a referne to current events? Since it was Rome that was persecuting Chrisitans throughout the Roman Empire AND the numeric value of the Emperor when John was writing this (Caesar Nero) was 666 it appears obvious John was writng about the current situation.

Just curious-do you beleiv that the Catholic Church is the Whore of Babylon?

The woman which thou sawest is that great city, which reigneth over the kings of the earth. … Here is the mind which hath wisdom: The seven heads are seven mountains on which the woman sitteth" (Revelation 17:18,9).

Whore of Babylon?
Seven Hills?
Clothed in Purple and Red ?
Possesses Great Wealth?
Sheds the Blood of Saints?
Reigns over Kings?

I don’t know what all of you will think about this. But, I think what Apostle John really mean are:

Whore of Babylon = Paganism
Seven Hills = 7 Country
Clothed in Purple and Red = Colour of Flag/Nation
Possesses Great Wealth = Powerful/Strong
Sheds the Blood of Saints = Kill the followers of Jesus Christ
Reigns over Kings = Rule other nation/country

Now, it seems to be logic, in the last day, there will be 7 Strong Pagan Country to be combine under 1 new “Flag”. And they will Kill the followers of Jesus Christ & Rule other nation/country. Of course, this “New Alliance” receive orders from the “City”.

Anyway, this is only my opinion…but to say Vatican is the “Whore” seems to be simple minded.🤷
