no, Jesus wants us to come to him in a state of grace which is why when he healed he began by first forgiving sin. The Church requires us to be in a state of grace to receive communion because Christ requires it. We do not come to him soiled in order to remain in his presence in our tattered condition, but so that he may return us to the pristine state. Recall the parable of the wedding feast in Luke’s gospel, and those who are not admitted because they are not wearing wedding garments.
puzzleannie is right. Look at the end of the parable in Matthew 22:8-14.
"Then he said to his servants, ‘The wedding is ready, but those invited were not worthy. Go therefore to the thoroughfares, and invite to the marriage feast as many as you find.’ And those servants went out into the streets and gathered all whom they found, both bad and good; so the wedding hall was filled with guests.
"But when the king came in to look at the guests, he saw there a man who had no wedding garment; and he said to him, ‘Friend, how did you get in here without a wedding garment?’ And he was speechless. Then the king said to the attendants, ‘Bind him hand and foot, and cast him into the outer darkness; there men will weep and gnash their teeth.’For many are called, but few are chosen.’”
Even though the king had invited
everyone, the man who entered without exchanging his filthy clothes for clean wedding clothes was cast out. As Paul says, “Let a man examine himself, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup. For any one who eats and drinks without discerning the Body eats and drinks judgment upon himself. That is why many of you are weak and ill, and some have died” (I Cor. 11:28-30).
This is not something the Church invented to twist Christ’s welcoming nature into something unwelcoming. This is exactly as Christ explains it to us, both in His own words and through Paul’s. The Church merely tells us that same message out of love for us, because, like Christ, His Bride does not want any of us to be weak, will, or dead because of our disregard for the warnings of Christ on this matter.
