Question about the Lamb of God

In the lamb of God part of the mass, I was always taught that the correct phrase was Lamb of God who takes away the sin (singular) of the world have mercy on us. Now someone told me that it should be plural sins. Which is correct and why?

If you say “takes away the sin” it is in the plural sense, meaning to take away all sin. To, technically plural is correct since there isn’t just one sin. But either work, as long as the intention is the plural form.
 
The prayer in Latin is “Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis.”

peccata is the plural accusative of peccatum, so literally the prayer is “Lamb of God, (you) who take-away/lift the sins of the world, have-mercy for/on-us.”

1 John 2:2 "And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for [the sins of] the whole world.
 
There’s been no change to the Lamb of God. We have said ‘sins’ since 1975.

There is a change in the Gloria, though, which used to say

“you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us”

but now says

“you take away the sins of the world: have mercy on us”
