Hey Everybody.
Code:
This is Tracy. I am a cradle Catholic, but as y'all know, there's still some stuff I don't understand about my own faith. This one has to do with Jesus and His undying love for us.

The doctrine of the Church says that Jesus loves us as a husband would love his wife. That's great. What I don't understand is how He is able to do this equally with everyone in the world - all 7 billion of us, or however many we have now. In fact, the very fact that Jesus does love everbody the same sort of causes me to lose faith that He loves me in that way. I mean, my goodness, He's got all these other people to love, why me, right? What makes me so special? I would probably take away from His time with someone else if He took the time to love me.

One reason I ask this is because I just read an article about Mother Teresa of Calcutta in the latest *Columbia* magazine and how she loved the Lord as if He were her husband. Foolish me, I actually thought her to be foolish for a minute because of this doubt I just described above. I guess I wondered if she was wasting her time loving her Lord in the way that was described in the article (staring at the tabernacle for hours...there's no way I could do that!) This is when I decided that I should probably ask the smart and nice people at Catholic Forums what they thought. I thank you in advance for any responses.

Well the short answer is, because he is God and we aren’t. 🙂

But I know that’s not very satisfying. The longer answer, I think, is that God can love us all perfectly because he knows us all perfectly. He knew each of us perfectly before he formed us in the womb. He knew each of us perfectly before the foundation of the world. This is how he can love each of us perfectly.

See, the problem is that you are trying to confine God in a box. You can’t put limitations on GOD!!

He created each one of us individually. He molded us with his own hands… He loves us all!!

Don’t underestimate GOD… He is not like us… we are limited as to how we can love and who we can love… GOD ISN’T LIMITED.

Tracy, I understand your question perfectly. I often thought I was so unimportant that when I went to heaven I would just sit in a corner and hope another lost soul would be kind enough to relate to me. It is beyond my comprehension to think that an important person would even care that I made it to heaven. Then, to try to imagine that not only an important “person” but the most important Supreme Being of all, God, would not only be the first person to greet me but He would be filled with love for me like I couldn’t imagine. Yes…couldn’t image…!!! Our brains and our imaginations are made for this earth. I am old enough to have been born before television and fax machines. I still “can’t imagine” how those pictures get from the TV studio to my TV or how all those words get from your fax machine to my fax paper. It boggles my mind how computers can communicate instantly to millions of people at the same time. These are all man-made machines…not God. When we get to heaven we will not be using our tiny human brains but will be brilliant, beautiful and all loving. In heaven truth and love are one and the same. God is truth and love and we will be part of that truth and love. Part of God’s love is his willingness to share. If and when you and I make it to heaven we will also be loving and want to share with all our billions of new friends. Just like that computer can communicate with millions at the same time, God is able to not only communicate but also love billions of us at the same time. Remember the word “time” is an earthly word. There is no time in God’s heaven. God is past, present and future all at the same,“time”.

Jesus loves the Church as a husband loves his wife, that is the analogy used by St Paul, among others. That does not imply that Jesus loves each individual member of the church in that way. However he does love each person completely and wholly. God does not divide his love, so that if there are 7 million people they each get less of His love than if there were only 6 million. 7 million or 70 million, all God’s children get all His love. That is because he is God, and infinite, only humans are finite and limited in their ability to understand and respond to his love.

Mother Teresa, like other nuns, was speaking of the special relationship that those in her vocation aspire to, that of spiritual marriage, to be a bride of Christ in the spiritual sense. In that role, women in this vocation represent the Church.

another analogy used in speaking of Christ’s relationship with His Church is the term, Mystical Body of Christ, in that we, the human members of the Church are members of the Body, as He is its Head. Paul takes this analogy in several places. These are just that, analogies, comparisons of something known in human experience, used to explain something that can never be known, the Nature of God, and of His relationship with His creatures.

How could you not love God that much? He gave his life to you and how can he do this specifically for you, well he is God and “To God all things are possible” (Jesus). Look at scripture, especially the Gospels and don’t put limits on God. Because when you put limits on God, “You are thinking as human beings think, not as God thinks” (Jesus).

Thank you all for your responses. I like the idea that God is not limited. That’s pretty mind blowing. And also that He knows us perfectly. It’s easy to love somebody if you know them, I guess. And that Heaven’s “time” is different than ours. If God doesn’t have to “answer” to our system of time, then yes, I guess it would be easier to love and respond to everybody that He needed to. So I guess since God has no limits, then it follows that He would have an unlimited amount of time to spend with me, right? Amazing. An unlimited amount of time to hear my prayers?

Tracy, this baffling aspect of God caused the Psalmist to write “What is man, that thou art mindful of him?” Psalm 8:4 👍
