In the bible, it says that we are all priests now. (Oh, I can’t remember where. If anyone wants me to look this up, I will.)
When I look in the CCC, it says this:
1591 The whole Church is a priestly people. Through Baptism all the faithful share in the priesthood of Christ. This participation is called the “common priesthood of the faithful.” Based on this common priesthood and ordered to its service, there exists another participation in the mission of Christ: the ministry conferred by the sacrament of Holy Orders, where the task is to serve in the name and in the person of Christ the Head in the midst of the community.
1592 The ministerial priesthood differs in essence from the common priesthood of the faithful because it confers a sacred power for the service of the faithful. The ordained ministers exercise their service for the People of God by teaching (munus docendi), divine worship (munus liturgicum) and pastoral governance (munus regendi).
My question is that when the NT says we are all priesthood holders, how can they NOT mean ministerial priests? Every place in the OT where priests are discussed, they are ministerial priests. It seems that no where in the OT do they discuss common priests. Why, then, if the NT verse that indicates we are now all priests, does it not clarify that we are simply COMMON priests which would have been an entirely new concept? The way it reads seems to be clear that they are talking ministerial priests, like the OT Levites.
Could someone point me toward scripture? I am having a discussion w/ a Protestant friend, and am having a hard time refuting this. Thanks!
