Question about the Rosary

I was getting ready to say my Rosary today and it occurred to me that perhaps the Sorrowful mysteries were not appropriate for the Feast of the Immaculate Conception; that perhaps the Glorious mysteries might be more appropriate.

Are we obliged to say them on certain days, or can we honor a certain event (like today’s) with “another day’s” mysteries?

I don’t know if it is allowed to replace the Sorrowful Mysteries with say the Glorious Mysteries. But as for me the Sorrowful Mysteries are personally the most meaningful. The essence of salvation is the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus and meditating on the passion is most profound. 🙂
 
My understanding is that we are not “required” to say certain mysteries on certain days, but just suggestions. I personally see nothing wrong with saying the Glorious Mysteries on the feast of ICC. If you want to make sure you’re covered (or just a bit scrupulous, like me 😃 ) you can say both!
 
I think it’s only a suggestion that the mysteries only for certain days so that in a week we would pray all mysteries.

For me, I’d try to follow, but in certain circumstances, such as when I’m feeling sad, I’d pray the sorrowful mysteries. It’s easier to meditate it.

Of course, it will be better if we could pray the four mysteries daily. 😃
 
Now I’m confused. I thought that each of the 10 beads were a different mystery? Is your question because you say 10 beads everyday, rather than the entire rosary at once - or am I missing something here?

I am not sure about the obligation; It does not hurt to do the Sorrowful mysteries and Glorious mysiteries - the more the better 🙂

However, in all Mysteries: Joful, Sorrowful, Alumnious, and Glorious Mysteries, you will find it very appropirate for this event - after all, God chose Virgin Mary to be His Mother and made Her sinless for His Mission on Earth.

If you mediate on Sorrowful ones, you can think of Her pure heart during the time Jesus was put to death. How Her pure Heart join Jesus’s Heart is so beautiful.

Imagine you put yourself in a situation where someone hurt your love one, would you react the same way as Virgin Mary did or would you do something different? Her pure heart was full of love that she knew Jesus had to die for us. - Would an unpure heart be able to do what she could?

Well, that is some of my thought when I recite the rosary today.

Each SET of 10 beads is one mystery. Therefore, there are five mysteries of each (5 Sorrowful, 5 Glorious, 5 Joyful and 5 Luminous).

Thank you everyone for your responses! I did end up saying the Glorious Mysteries. It just felt right to me.

5 each? I did not know that. I’m going to have to pull out my roasry how-to book again. How did I miss that? :o

I felt the same way and prayed the Joyful mysteries instead of the Sorrowful mysteries (On Friday December 8). Another reply you got is correct. The mysteries for each day are suggested and not required. If you pray the Rosary each day, I think the important thing is to pray each set of mysteries at least once each week.

I often am out-of-synch with the Church’s recommended mystery of the day. Because I tend to pray around 10 decades each day on weekdays (sometimes more and sometimes less). And try to stay in order. When joining others praying the Rosary in Church, of course, the leader will mostly lead the mysteries prescribed for that day.

*The Mysteries of the Rosary

The Rosary is made up of twenty “mysteries” (significant events or moments in the life of Jesus and Mary), which, following the Apostolic Letter Rosarium Virginis Mariae, are grouped into four series.

The first contains joyful mysteries (recited on Mondays and Saturdays); the second, the mysteries of light (Thursdays); the third, the sorrowful mysteries (Tuesdays and Fridays); and the fourth, the glorious mysteries (Wednesdays and Sundays).

“This indication is not intended to limit a rightful freedom in personal and community prayer, where account needs to be taken of spiritual and pastoral needs and of the occurrence of particular liturgical celebrations which might call for suitable adaptations” (Rosarium Virginis Mariae, 38).

As an aid to the meditative and contemplative journey of the Rosary, two texts are given for each ‘mystery’: one from Sacred Scripture, the other from the Catechism of the Catholic Church.
