Question about the RSV-CE study bibles and verse-by verse commentary

Can someone who has one or more of the books please tell me how the commentary is. I** am particularly interested in knowing whether or not the series provides verse-by-verse commentary or something very close to it.** Also, is the series apolegetic in nature? is it clear for a layman? is it aimed more for intermediate or for expert readers? etc

Also, does someone know other verse-by-verse commentaries or study bibles besides the Haydock bible?

I’m not sure which particular RSV-CE bible you’re referring to, but I like the Ignatius Catholic Study Bible series, but it’s not yet complete. I have Matthew, Mark and John, but decided to delay further purchases until it’s complete.

Yeah, thats what I meant, the Ignatius Study Bible. Can you tell me how it is, at least in relation to my questions in the OP if you don’t mind.

I have all the volumes released so far and use them extensively.

In format and layout, the ISB’s are very similar to Protestant study Bibles (like the NIV Study Bible) but from a solidly Catholic perspective. It does go verse by verse and incorporates apologetics, as well as historical background, writings of the Saints (especially the Early Church Fathers), and the Catechism of the Catholic Church. There are introductions to each book, some side-bars about certain words and topics, and questions for study and meditation at the end of each volume.

I highly recommend the ISB’s to everyone as it is highly readable and accessable. I only hope they come out with the one volume version in my lifetime! :gopray2:

I use the Navarre Series. It’s a little expensive and I don’t believe that the Old Testiment commentary has been completed. I have the complete New Testiment however and I have found it very good!

The Navarre Bible is complete. It’s pricey, though. It’s available in several versions:

A twelve-volume New Testament set:
