I would like to receive a properly blessed Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, and have some questions:

1.) Is it proper etiquette to ask a priest to give you this sacramental, or would that be wrong?
2.) If you shouldn’t ask a priest for one, how does one receive it/under what circumstances?
3.) If you were theoretically a member of a Holy Order (ex: a Dominican priest) would you be able to receive the scapular, or would this be wrong?

Thanks!

Years ago a very pious parish priest enrolled all of his parishioners in the brown scapular…I am not sure how he did it. It didn’t appear to be done at mass ,that I can recall, nor were we required to wear a cloth scapular

You could ask the Priest for one. Whether or not he would give it to you is another question. Many parishes enroll people into the scapular on a semi regular basis and when they do, normally they provide the scapulars.

You can buy them at practically any Catholic supply house or bookstore. You can order them on line. Often people that are heavily involved in the Church, adorers, devout rosary reciters, Knights of Columbus Legion of Mary etc, will have access to the scapulars and can provide them to you.

Anyone can be enrolled into the scapular, clergy or laity…

The enrollment is typically done either before or after the Mass. The wearing of the cloth scapular can be avoided for lack of a better word if one wears the medal. I don’t think anyone could be unwillingly enrolled into the scapular.

I am sure he felt all practicing Catholics would be willing…none the less he told us during mass we were enroled…I wear a miraculous medal

I won’t say no, but there are prayers that are said by the Priest and the congregation during the enrollment ceremony, which normally includes everyone actually wearing the scapular, at least during the ceremony itself.

I recall I had a discussion many years ago (pre-1969) with a very dear Carmelite (O. Carm) priest where the subject of the Scapular came up. Perhaps a look at carmelnet.org/scapular/scapular.htm might be helpful.

While I do not recall the details of the conversation, I do remember him also saying that there is a difference between the cloth Scapular and a scapular medal.

Perhaps we did partake it has been a few decades ago, and I do recall a lot of woolen scapulars at mass…anyway I have never worn a scapular medal, but I have worn my miraculous medal

I’m not 100% sure but I believe that the medal has to be the scapular medal and it has to be blessed. I’m not sure that a miraculous medal would take its place.

It might not…but it is what I choose to wear…I’ll trust in Our Lady what ever medal she is on…🙂

anyone may wear it…in fact, many non-Catholics do!

but to be enrolled in the Confraternity of the Brown Scapular,a priest must enroll you…it is a very short ceremony

one enrolled, you should never remove it unless circumstances warrant it… this includes bathing, btw…If a scapular wears out, you may replace it without having the new one Blessed. The wool scapular may be replaced with a metal scapular if the wearer has skin problems associated with wool (rash), but the wool is preferred by most wearers

it is a wonderful devotion!

suggestion: If you plan to enroll in the Confraternity, please prayerfully consider the Total Consecration to Christ through Mary either in the St Louis de Montfort 33 day form (receiving the scapular on the 33rd day,and preferrably on a Marian feast day) Or, by the Militia of the Immaculata form (St Maximilian Kolbe )

my prayers are with you!

I started wearing the brown scapular and did quite a bit of research on it, first. According to all I’ve read, you are to take off the brown scapular only for bathing or swimming (like the times a Carmelite religious would take off their large scapular).😉

That’s fine… but unless you wear a cloth scapular or the scapular medal you receive the graces attached to the Miraculous Medal, not the brown scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. I’m not denigrating or minimizing the Miraculous Medal - just observing that it is a different devotion.
