Question about the Sacraments

I basically have 3 questions about the sacraments. They are:
  1. What constitutes a sacrament?
  2. Why is confirmation required if one has gone through baptism? Where is this supported in the Bible?
  3. Although the reasoning behind confession is given in John 20:19-23 where is it shown to be required? Do you have to go through the priest in order for your sins to be forgiven?
I appreciate your help. I’m a Catholic and I’m trying to better understand the Church and the faith. Hopefully ya’ll can help me understand these issues better. Thanks again!

Hmm, some good questions. Im not sure what constitutes a sacrament though. As for confirmation, one of the answers I got was that it sort of completed the Initiation (not sure what the exact name of it is though). I’m also not sure where it is in the bible, my only guess would be the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles. But don’t take my word for that.

Yes, you do have to go to a Catholic Priest for your sins to be forgiven, that I’m sure of. But as for the requirement of having to go to confession, i’m not sure. I just know about John 20:23.

Don’t take my word for it, i’m not 100% sure on all i’ve said here. So i’m sure that someone will come and answer…
 
Not to wimp out on you (I’m very tired and dinner is on the way), but here is an article about the Seven Sacraments from the Catholic encyclopedia from a few years ago. But, since the teachings of the Church don’t change, it ought to be helpful to you.
 
Do you have a Catechism? Please get one and all of the questions you present are answered there.

There are 7 Sacraments, and they were instituted by Christ to confer grace. The Church has authority over when and how they are performed. Yes, confession is required when one has sinned mortally.

Pentecost and Baptism were two different events were they not? Why was Pentecost required?

Also, look at Acts 8:14-17.

The Samarian was Baptized by Phillip, the Deacon. But Phillip still sent him to see Peter and John (Bishops) so that they might endow him with the Holy Spirit, which “had not yet fallen on them”

Why was that?

Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective

From a practical aspect, the Apostles (and thus the bishops) have the Authority to bind or forgive sin. How can they decide which to do if they don’t hear them 😉
