LoyalViews,

Since the four bishops of the SSPX have had their excommunications lifted, they are in full communion with the Catholic Church. The Society itself has not been regularized within the Church yet, but they are not in schism. 🙂

Thank you! A Clear answer! Also, thank you to the other answers! Mod’s, You can new close this thread 😃

Very funny, but no 😉 😃 ! I am just careful … I don’t want to get anything from a group that I know is in opposition to Rome
You’re not hearing what I’m saying. The Society is NOT, nor has it ever been, in opposition to Rome. Where do you come up with this garbage, and why do you persist in spreading your errors so matter-of-factly???

The Society is all for being able to continue the tradition sacraments, and have a right to. The old Mass, as they have argued since the beginning, and to the shock of many a cleric, was never abrogated.

They aren’t in opposition to Rome. They are, however, in opposition to various things (including manners of expressing what used to be clear Catholic dogma) that have seriously and gravely muddied Catholics’ understanding of what the Church teaches, and they are right to do so. People may argue with their methods (such as the episcopal consecrations in '88), but that doesn’t mean they don’t have a point.

As I stated before, get your facts straight before you continue to unknowingly besmirch and misrepresent what the SSPX is, and what they do.

Talk about straining the gnat and swallowing the camel.

Every day, and especially on Sundays, you rub shoulders with fellow Catholics who, despite appearances, are schismatics. They practice birth control, are divorced and remarried outside the Church and go up to recieve Holy Communion, they support abortion in cases of rape and incest, are pro-choice, pro-IVF, pro-euthenasia, etc. etc. There are priests who, despite being “in good standing”, couldn’t care less what the Holy Father says or writes or does. They’ll do what they want, when they want to do it, and no one, especially that man in the Vatican, will tell them what to do!

But, heaven forbid, you should buy something from those SSPX heretics. You might unintentionally imbibe some uncatholic ideas and, before you know it, start acting like a, gasp, traditional Catholic like your grandparents were.
Great post. Methinks of a “cardinal” in Italy who espouses the view that life doesn’t begin at conception but “sometime after”. That’s great pal, maybe you can enlighten us all with exactly when life does begin. That’s an extremely serious scandal if you ask me as it could very easily lead to, among other things, women having more abortions thinking the “life” of their baby has not commenced yet. Or the German bishop who claims Jesus “did not die for our sins”. Complete and unequivocal heresy, and it just shows there is a total double standard. It’s as if the more heretical you are, the further you get promoted. SSPX has never espoused any heretical teaching. On the contrary, I hear undiluted truth when I assist at their churches.

At one of the last SSPX Mass of All Times I assisted the priest requested women stay after Mass for a few minutes to pray for vocations (most of them stayed and prayed). I do not recall ever hearing such a request at an OF Mass. In the end, we may find them to be the most Catholic of all. I therefore have no problem buying their books and DVDs. They have only helped me on my spiritual journey and I only wish I had known about them earlier.

Malleus: In addition - I see a lot of misinformation directed at SSPX parishioners. For example - the person who makes the false claim that SSPX is in Schism then assumes and believes that every single parishioner is likewise in schism for recieving the Sacraments there. Nothing could be further from the truth. Lets say for arguments sake - they were. A Catholic layperson in good standing doesnt automatically incur sanction for petitioning the Sacraments. The Priest may be defiant to lawful authority but the sin would be his anyway. I simply get tired of closet theologians spreading misinformation. The simple fact is - Archbishop Lefebvre state clearly the reasons why he did what he did. To preserve Tradition. That isnt an act of Schism. And even if it were - there is no Ecclesiastic Law against Laity recieving Valid Sacraments from Validly Ordained Priests.

And BTW - I dont frequent SSPX Saccraments. I have been to only a few SSPX Masses in my entire life. I just get tired of the misinformation about them.

Very good points Malleus, and I’ll continue to point out that there are places in the world where it is far better to attend mass at an SSPX Chapel than to be force fed a diet of ecumenism, humanism, feminism, socialism and homosexuality.

Also if you google “Hawaii Six” and “SSPX” you can see what Rome has said on the matter regarding the status of people who attend Society Masses - they are most definitely NOT in schism.

Malleus: Agreed and John Salza writes in “Scripture Catholic”

" Further, Canon 1335 provides that where a latae sententiae censure has not been declared, the prohibition on celebrating the sacraments is suspended whenever a member of the faithful requests a sacrament or sacramental or an act of governance “for any just cause.” As applied here, John Paul II did not declare a latae sententiae excommunication against SSPX priests. Thus, assuming SSPX priests are suspended, they are nevertheless allowed to celebrate the sacraments licitly if a member of the faithful so requests for any just cause. A desire to attend the Traditional Mass, which right was secured by Pope Saint Pius V and recognized by Pope John Paul II, is certainly a just cause. Sound, spiritual direction in the confessional for the welfare of one’s soul is also a just cause. The salvation of souls is the supreme law of the Church.

Further, Canon 844, sec. 2 provides that the Christian faithful can even approach non-Catholic ministers for Penance, the Eucharist and Anointing of the Sick in whose churches these sacraments are valid if it is physically or morally impossible to approach a Catholic minister for the sacraments. If SSPX priests were really not Catholics (which is not true), Catholics could still approach them for the sacraments if it were physically or morally impossible to approach a Catholic priest. Unfortunately, in many OF only parishes, Catholics in good conscience believe that it is morally impossible to approach their priests for the sacraments, due to their questionable intentions in celebrating the sacraments (e.g., whether they intend to offer the Sacrifice; because they deny mortal sin, etc.), grave disregard for liturgical rubrics, abuses of the Eucharist, modernist theology, immodest dress, and anything else that endangers their souls and the souls of their children. The faithful have a right to be certain of the doctrine and the sacraments that they receive.

Further, it makes no sense to me that a Catholic can receive the sacraments from a non-Catholic minister but not from a Catholic (SSPX) priest. Canon 844 demonstrates that the Church wants the faithful to have the broadest access possible to the sacraments of Jesus Christ. Why? Because the supreme law of the Church is the salvation of souls. SSPX priests do what they do for that very reason.

Here is the Link of the entire discussion :

John Salza and J Akin (both of whom I have a great deal od respect for)

I knew that parishioners of the SSPX were not schismatic!! My God, if the parishioners were schismatic, then wouldn’t that mean about more than half of the people on this forum were schismatic. I just thought that the SSPX was schismatic (their priests, bishops, brothers, monks, nuns…etc), but now I see that they are not.
Mea culpa, Mea Culpa, Mea maxima culpa

I’m greatly in favour of the FSSP however, I do get fed up with the constant bashing of the SSPX that goes on. They do not reject any Catholic teaching. They accept all dogmas of the Faith and actually teach them to their congregations. Yet, we have priests ‘in good standing’, who are basically heretics and are spineless in asserting the Catholic Faith.

Heretics are assigned to parishes, they are given titles of honour, allowed to lecture on the Faith and nothing is said.

There is nothing wrong with buying items from the Society, just as there is nothing wrong paying taxes when much of it goes to murdering the unborn.

On the SSPX’s website, you have to check a box stating what you are - priest, seminarian, etc. They are clearly intending it only for clergy, so it would be lying to order the DVDs. Even so, if the SSPX intends it to be sold only to clergy, I’d rather respect their wishes on the matter.

I have no problem ordering other materials from them, and have before. I plan on doing so again.

Indeed, that was a fine and simple answer. The Spartans would have smiled.
