I recently did the total consecration to Jesus through Mary through the Nenevah 90 website. I understand I give Mary all the merits and indulgence of my prayers and good work to dispose of as she pleases. Does that mean I can’t earn an indulgence for a specific person, say my father dies I can’t specifically earn one for him?

You dont need to consecrate to anyone , in a long or short form , to earn partial or primary indulgences.
Your good works should always be for the Glory of God. You can offer them to any saint, including Mary.

But you can still gain indulgences for yourself or the dead.
To gain an indulgence , either for yourself only , or for someone who is dead,

Communion, confession, prayers to the pope , and a work as listed in the indulgences,

The three easiest works are
For plenary indulgences
  1. Read the bible for half an hour or more anywhere,
  2. Say the Rosary in a church
  3. Stations of the cross in a church.
You cannot earn indulgences for anyone else living. But you can earn them for the dead. I try all the time, for tjose in purgatory.

St Louis de Montfort answers this by saying yes and no, basically we entrust all our intentions to the Blessed Mother. So we ask for (in this case your father) but also say, “may your will be done”. Trusting that our mother will take our considerations and intentions into account but she will ultimately do God’s Holy will.

In short we must have a greater degree of faith that even though we ask for something, it may be lesser on the priority list and so the indulgence may go somewhere else. Yet always trusting in our Mother that she will take care of us and everything we pray, think and worry about, through the power of God.

The short and simple answer comes from St. Padre Pio, “Pray, Hope and don’t worry”.

You are correct. A Total Consecration to Jesus through Mary does mean that all merits and indulgences that you attain are given to Mary to distribute as she pleases.

Mary is a good mother. Trust her. That is what the consecration is all about. Trust her that when your father dies some of the indulgences you earn will be his.

Trust in our Blessed Mother to do what is best for us and for our family and friends.

Wait. I never understood this ‘total consecration’ stuff. It’s sort of illogical.

All my merit goes to others? Don’t I get any ‘credit’ or ‘merit’ for making the total consecration?

I didn’t know that was what ‘total consecration’ was? Isn’t it spiritual suicide? Am I being “selfish” to want some spiritual merit for myself?

Oh, I get it, maybe. It’s a spiritual Ponzi scheme. I give all MY merit away but I benefit by others who give away all THEIR merit, so I get some of theirs.

Ultimately all the value of your good actions will be disposed of according to the perfect goodness of our Immaculate Mother.

But Mary will help your father more because you are totally consecrated to Jesus through Mary.

Here is a passage from St. Louis which addresses this in number 132 of True Devotion to Mary:

If your Parish has a Legion of Mary, I recommend you become either & active or auxiliary member. Membership will instruct you on the total consecration & its meaning & practices.

ok people stop giving out false information. plenary and partial indulgences are offered by the Pope for our good works. we can apply these indulgences to ourselves or those who are dead.

this louis. total consecration of over 30
days was enacted in the 17th. century.

the Pope updated the list of indulgences late last century.

anyone regardless of consecration to 10 saints or one or fhe Blessed
Virgin , can earn indulgences.

the Pope says so!

What people are writing here is not false. Have you not read anywhere that Pope St. John-Paul II talked about the book “True Devotion to Mary” changing his life? That book written by St. Louis de Monfort is all about consecration to Jesus through Mary.

Here is a link to an article from the Catholic Company that explains about the Pope, St. Louis and the book.

True Devotion, Mary, and Pope John Paul

The consecration is an individual choice. No one is forced to make the commitment but please don’t throw it out without knowing something about it first. People can and do pray for their loved ones and other favors offering those to Mary with the knowledge that she will do the BEST thing with them (and with the supplicant’s merits) which at the time may not be their own loved ones. However, Mary, like Jesus is never outdone and remember she has the full mind of God in these things. She isn’t going to make a mistake about where they are needed. You in turn will have the help and graces that you need at the time they are needed because our Holy Mother can be trusted to take care of us. We don’t have to worry about ourselves.

You seem to be a wealth of misinformation, misunderstanding, and a detractor of devotions that aid the soul in holiness. The consecration is a 30 day process, not a one-off experience. It launches lifetime of devotion.

Get your facts straight and stop the negative comments about valid and worthwhile devotions.

The attainment of indulgences is not deterred or prevented by this devotion. The indulgences are merely offered to our Blessed Mother to distribute. Obviously, she is in better position to know who needs them most.

And NO ONE is saying that a person cannot attain indulgences without this devotion, or that one has to practice this devotion to distribute indulgences ourselves, or to offer them to our Blessed Mother without doing this devotion. Where on God’s green earth did you learn that nonsense?

A good act done in a state of grace and with a supernatural motive has a threefold value, namely, it is meritorious, satisfactory, and impetratory. The meritorious value of a good act, i.e., an increase of sanctifying grace and of the glory or reward of heaven is personal. That is, the meritorious value of our good works are incommunicable to other persons except in the case of Jesus Christ. Accordingly, St Louis de Montfort says in the Secret of Mary “By this devotion we also place our merits into the hands of Our Lady, but only that she may perserve, augment and embellish them, because we cannot communicate to one another either the merits of sanctifying grace or those of glory.”

The satisfactory and impetratory value or our good acts can be communicated to others. So, St Louis de Montfort continues in the same work “However, we give her all our prayers and good works inasmuch as they have an impetratory and satisfactory value, that she may distribute and apply them to whom she pleases.” As St Louis de Montfort remarks, this is practicing the commandment of charity towards your neighbor in the highest degree. There is nothing saying as well that Our Lady may not apply the satisfactory and impetratory value of our good acts to ourselves too or a part of them. God and Our Blessed Lady are not going to be outdone in generosity. By giving all the satisfactory and impetratory value of our good works and prayers to Our Lady to distribute and apply them to whom she pleases, we are simply following the example of Jesus Christ who sacrificed his life on the cross not for himself but for the redemption of the human race. ‘Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends’ (John 15:13). And St Thomas Aquinas says ‘since greater charity is evidenced by a man satisfying for another than for himself, less punishment is required of him who satisfies for another.’

Yes, all is given to Mary when we make this consecration. However, let me offer you an analogy that will put your mind to rest. Lets say you had a child, who did some chores to earn some money. Because your child loves you, they give you all the money he earned. After doing this, if your child desired something good, like say a sucker, would you be more inclined to refuse him because he gave all his money to you? Or rather, because he gave you all his money, wouldn’t you be even more inclined to pay back his generosity? It is the same with consecration.

Trust in Mary! She always helps her children. 🙂

Okay, for example here are some quotes from the book “The Dogma of Purgatory” which has the Nihil Obstat and Imprimatur of the Church. Maybe this will help explain it to you a little better, while it’s not exactly Total Consecration to the Blessed Mother it is very similar.

"Formula for the Heroic Act: “O Holy and Adorable Trinity, desiring to co-operate in the deliverance of the souls in Purgatory, and to cede and testify my devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, I cede and renounce in behalf of those Holy Souls all the satisfactory part of my works, and all the sufferages which may be given to me after my death, consigning them entirely into the hands of the most Blessed Virgin, that she may apply them according to her good pleasure to those souls of the faithful departed whom she desires to deliver from their sufferings. Deign, O my God, to accept and bless this offering which I make to thee at this moment. Amen”

Father Mumford goes on to say, “I do not believe that they [people] can make a better use of them [indulgences and the like mentioned in the prayer above], since they render them more meritorious and efficacious, as well for obtaining grace from God as for expiating their own sins and shortening the term of their Purgatory, or even acquiring an entire exemption therefrom.”

In short, you can never out do God in mercy and charity. If you are so merciful and charitable that you give everything away to others, (which He kind of commands when He says love thy neighbor) do you not think that He will reward you for those acts?

Another question, do you think you really rate much at all? Should not we say “we are unprofitable servants” when we come before the Lord? Also, If the Lord has given unto you would it not be wise to follow His example and give unto others?

Finally brother, I understand if you don’t want to do these things, or don’t want to believe in them, but it is not wise to call them schemes, like God would allow such a thing to come into His Church and be promoted by so many Saints and Popes and really be false or a scheme, to me that is far more of a stretch than for it to actually be false.

You are very well-read and I congratulate you for that. But, all that you refer to are private revelations which are not binding on the faithful.

I know little of theology of these matters. And, therefore, I don’t even understand the word “consecration” in this context.

From a literal standpoint, I don’t know how to distinguish the effects of this consecration on merit transferred to others, and the more easily comprehensible idea of intercessory prayer. What’s the difference? Is the former somehow more efficacious than the latter?

When I pray the Lord’s prayer and the Hail Mary, I intend the word “us” to refer to everyone in the world – I mean that word inclusively, in the widest sense. So, what is lacking in that approach?

Is there anything in the Catechism (part four) that substantiates this transference of merit (it’s been some time since I read that section on prayer, all 60 pages of it !)

And those ignoring the requests of Our Lady of Fatima for First Saturday consecration are blindsided in their devotion to Our Lady.

The misinformation here is that one cannot perform Plenary or Partiial Indulgences because they did the 17th Century formula.

We have a Pope, a leader. He says how and when and what as far as indulgences go.

He has never said, nor have his predecessors, oh no sorry you can’t get an indulgence for your dead family or friend because you did that 30 day consecration.

And if you want to quote consecrations to me, quote what St John Paul 11 said about first Saturdays

AS REQUESTED by OUR LADY herself!

Obviously the Pope is in the best position to discuss the law of indulgences.

Take your own advice and listen to what Our Lady requested. In Fatima, in 1917. After all it’s the 100th Anniversary this year. And guess what! The Pope has granted us indulgences for it.

Hi Rosee,

In my opinion, it probably might help you if you were to familiarize yourself with the different ways that one can consecrate themselves to Our Lady, and the way that one can gain the different indulgences.

When we post here on the forum, we–meaning any one of us–must be careful of how we post, as we don’t know who is reading our posts and who may be influenced by the information that we post.

If what we post is incorrect and we are a Catholic, then we may be inadvertently passing along information that might affect how someone else might perceive the Catholic faith.

You could do with stopping in your efforts to publicly shame the very special consecration to Our Lady, and furthermore, using the Pope and Our Lady, herself, to do so.

Hi. It is great that you did the Consecration.

It seems, though, as if you are not understanding the consecration, on some level.

In a manner of humility, you pass your good works through the Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Mother, who, in the power of the Holy Spirit, can distribute these graces as she so pleases, as the Holy Spirit, her Mystical Spouse, updates us with what we need, just as He knows all that we need - nothing is outside the Will of the Father.

The whole point, is in fact, humility. By this consecration, one is leaving nothing for oneself, trusting that the more we consider ourselves to be nothing, the more God can fill us. The consecration makes room for Him. Just as the Father looks at humanity through the wounds of the Son, so the Son will then meet us in the Immaculate Heart of Mary - under her mantle.

So, as other posters have said, God knows what we need. If we leave nothing for ourselves, trusting that God will take care of us anyway, then this trust is the equivalent of an increase in faith.

Our own measure often falls short, we are not perfected, and our choices can be tainted by selfishness, even the best acts can be, and so by placing ourselves in the Immaculate Heart of Mary, we ask her to clean our offerings, before they go to her Son. I remember reading that our offerings to God can be like an unwashed and less-than-good condition apple (I might have gotten the analogy incorrect). Our Lady being Immaculate, washes the apple, makes it favourable and splendid, and offers it to God, on our behalf.
