Question about the use of the word "again" in the Aposle's and Nicene Creed

The Apostle’s Creed and the Nicene Creed say:

“He descended into hell.
On the third day He rose again.”

and

“On the third day he rose again in fulfillment of the Scriptures”

Why do we say “again”?

This came up in RCIA class and rather than wait until we get an answer next week (the instructor needs to run the question through Fr.) , I was hoping someone here could explain 😃

The Nicene Creed does NOT say “descended into hell”.

The Greek word “ananstanta” and Latin word “resurrexit” have prefixed that imply “again”.
 
It says “rose again” because it means He was living again after death and it means He had new life. He was alive after death, and He was changed: spiritualized, glorified. He could pass through solid objects, which He couldn’t do before death.
 
OHHH!!! :newidea: …sometimes the most obvious answer goes right over my head, I guess… :o

From the looks of it, the question needs to be asked every year…I was just getting it out of the way early for '09 😉 😃
 
A few years ago, there was a crazy-sounding song that was quite popular. It consisted of a bunch of guys practically shouting the words, “I get knocked down but I get up again,” and some other stuff I can’t remember. It’s simply a figure of speech in English. Figures of speech don’t always make literal sense and should not be taken literally.

The word “again” does not simply mean “a second time”. It also means “anew”. It also means “in response”. He rose anew from the dead; he rose to new life.
 
It looks redundant, but it’s just an English idiom. Accept it; it does no harm.
