Question about the validity of my sacramental confession

Hello,

I believe that I may have misrepresented the consequence of a certain sin, and I’m not sure if it’s to the point where the confession is invalidated. I confessed to a sin right at the end of reconciliation, and I said that it was the ‘last nail in the coffin’ and that I ‘then realized that things needed to stop’ (after committing it). Reflecting on this afterwards, I now see this really was not the case. I accurately described the nature of the particular sin, and it was the first and only time I committed it, but I believe I had some notion of the fact that this wasn’t really the turning point I said it was while I was in the confessional. Do I need to re-confess?

Thanks!

I would just mention your misgivings to the priest the next time you go to confession. I’m pretty sure he’s going to tell you not to worry about it — after all, making a firm purpose of amendment is largely an act of the will, not feeling or emotion — but I don’t want to second-guess him.

If you tried to make a good confession, you probably did, and consider that something was in your heart to make you have that firm purpose of amendment, even if you have some misgivings as to whether you really “meant it”. I’d be especially careful to avoid scrupulosity, and your priest may tell you that too.

Be at peace until the next time you go to confession.

Welcome to the forum.

Just ask the next time you’re in Confession. I agree with the others, though. What you’ve confessed is gone, and God doesn’t remember it. These scruples can rob you of your peace. Forgive yourself, then go in peace.

If that doesn’t work, then tell God that you would appreciate some kind of sign that you need to re-confess. If it doesn’t happen, pray for the grace to drop the matter.

Blessings,
Cloisters
