Question about Tridentine Mass

At the FSSP parish I attend every now and then, I have noticed that the congregation bows toward the priest and makes the sign of the cross as he processes down the aisle during the entrance/exit. My assumption would be that this is a sign of respect toward the ontological capacity of the priest to act in persona Christi. Is this a widespread practice? Is it a common characteristic of Tridentine masses? Why don’t you see it in novus ordo masses?

Here, at my local diocesan TLM, many genuflect and cross ourselves as the processional crucifix passes. We then bow as the priest passes by.

I’d say it’s common.

I have found that many will bow for a priest and genuflect while making the sign of the cross for the Bishop. Not sure if this is rubrical thing or just a tradition.

It is just a traditional pious practice, nothing more. At my OF-only parish no one does it for a priest, although most genuflect when a bishop comes.

Please keep in mind that when you genuflect for ANY human being, kneel on your left knee. Your RIGHT knee is reserved for Christ; as in when you genuflect toward the Tabernacle.

Again, a pious practice, but a good pious practice.
