Yes I believe so as you need to be able to understand it all before you do the consecration.
It doesn’t take that long to read though.
If you want any help with it I can help via pm.
Or you could email the Montfort Fathers.

There is an Association you can join once you have done the consecration and choose to be faithful for it forever. It’s called the Association of Mary Queen of all Hearts
I have a group for it here forums.catholic-questions.org/group.php?groupid=1336
You can learn more about the consecration there.

Here are some useful links

You’ll find doing the consecration certainly brings you closer to Jesus and Mary.
I believe it has done so for me.

Can we do this consecration with any special intentions or rather can I do this consecration solely with the aim of being granted special intention.(spiritual or material -not a selfish intention)Is that against the true purpose of consecration?
Is it mandatory that the consecration should end on a Marian day .I see that If I start on Feb20 I can be done with this my Mar 25 which is Annunciation
And again to be honest I fear that If I offer myself as a slave to Jesus/Mary suffering follows?

Also how many days it will take to finish the book assuming I read abt 20 mins per day?

The only intention it should be done for is to become consecrated to Jesus through Mary. Though come to think of it you could ask Mary and Jesus that through doing the consecration they could strengthen you in faith and help you acquire virtues. Know that once you do it your prayers do have more weight as Mary adds her merits to your prayers. So you can ask for the intention once you have done the consecration .
The Annunciation is on April 8 this year so start 33 days before that. It must fall on a Marian feast day. Double check the Annunciation is on 8th April in Australia.
In True Devotion it says that Mary makes your crosses sweet if you stay faithful to the devotion. She makes sufferings easier to bear.
20 minutes reading a day should get you through the book in the next month or less I’d say. I read almost half the book once in a night!

I have actually started reading St deMontfort’s “Total Consecration to Mary”. I and my family were at my sister’s house a week or so ago. I saw it on her bookshelf and began perusing through it. She let me borrow it.

I don’t read a whole lot. I am definitely not a reader… never have been. So, it may take me a bit to get through it. But, so far, I like it.

I have always had a special affinity for Mary. I remember when I was a young child, I used to always look up to the picture of Mary we had in the house. I don’t know why… I just always have. Even when I had fallen away from the Church for a (long) while, I still had that special affinity for her.

Can you consecrate someone else to Mary? I read of someone doing this, but how would that be done?

Hi Grace Under Fire, it’s normal I believe to have some doubts about the consecration at first, it happens to a lot of people. Know that a lot of Early Fathers and Popes have done this consecration themselves. JPII being a big advocate, same as Mother Teresa, St Louis de Montfort, St Max Kolbe.

I have done it myself and never regret it, the only thing I regret is if I’m not living it well enough. I know several Carmelite nuns that have done it.

I dont believe it is idolatry at all, it is consecrating ourselves to JESUS, with his Mother Marys help. I don’t see anything wrong with that. It is using her intercession to help us with our relationship with Jesus. We ask for her intercession in the Mass , the Rosary etc.

I had a problem at first with the Catholic devotion to Mary, my Pentecostal housemates were telling me it was wrong, I agreed. But I went away sad, feeling I rejected Mary, and then I wanted to involve her in my life and she really helped me in her typical Motherly way whilst I lived in that house, as I was in a way bullied there. It was interesting because we all had Jesus there, but suddenly when I took up a resolution to love Mary as much as I could, I had an extra edge and extra help and it was when I started investigating doing the consecration that I suddenly felt safe and protected in that household. Very interesting indeed. 😃

You should pray to the Holy Spirit for guidance and to Jesus and the Father, pray that you can see what is best for you, but I believe it will be only a matter of time until Mary really captures your heart. 😃 👍
God bless you through Mary our Holy Mother ❤️
I am afraid but drawn to it at the same time. . .I don’t know why I am afraid. Maybe because I don’t know where this could lead to. . .I am reading True Devotion now. It’s not easy to digest though. I’m trying to understand it, really understand it.

Don’t be silly. As I said JPII did it Saints have done it and they’re not in Hell.

I have started reading “True Devotion” book.Finding it a bit hard to digest though

I was wondering about something and seeing this thread is prompting me to ask a question hoping some one might have an answer. I was consecrated to our Blessed Mother when I was quite young. I do not remember much about and am wanting/longing to consecrate myself to her again. Kind of like a renewal of vows or something. My first question is would this be ok to do? I am thinking it is ok but just not sure. The other question I have is that every time I try to do this through the one by St. Louis De Montfort I find myself cringing, I believe it may be because of the demons from my bast that I am still trying to work through. Anyway I was wondering if any one knows if there is another way of consecration ones self to Mary that one could use instead of the one by St. Louis De Montfort? Thank you in advance for any help or insight you may have it is most appreciated.

“My Ideal: Jesus Son Of Mary” - An alternative to St. de Montfort’s Total Consecration 👍

Yes, in fact with the St Louis de Montfort Consecration, it’s meant to be “renewed” every year 🙂 it’s like renewing it, that’s fine.

I would maybe try to examine why you feel this way, because the devotion is good and holy… I remember when I made my Consecration, the day of, I got extremely doubtful about it and felt really scared, but then after Communion, I felt peace about it. So are these just feelings? I would pray the Rosary about this maybe? but there’s also St Maximilian Kolbe, and someone linked the book “My Ideal” which is great too 🙂 they’re all related to this.

God bless!

Thank you that is reassuring.

I have been examining why…I know it does not have anything to do with with the devotion it’s self. I know the devotion is good and holy.🙂 but I am wondering if it might be better to just go with St. Louis’s devotion or not. Do you know anything about St. Maximilian’s? Is there a book or something that I could read? Thank you for taking the the time to respond and God Bless you too

The True Devotion was written in 1712, long after all the Early Fathers have died.
Actually I am pretty sure in the book True Devotion St Louis de Montfort mentions how this devotion has been in the Church for a long time…

I have been feeling the nudge to do the total consecration but afraid at the same time. Being a convert, the idea of “to Jesus through Mary” is a sticking point for me. I accept all of the Marian doctrines and have a special affinity for the Holy Virgin. However, I can’t get consecration out of my head. . .

I’m reading True Devotion slowly and carefully and trying to determine if I can accept this pathway to heaven. I asked myself: what if it’s not true at all? And I reasoned that God in His mercy wouldn’t not see this as idolatry but as my feeble attempt to reach Him. I can’t imagine someone being cast into hell because of this. 🤷 (Seems like an extreme train of throught but we get one shot at this life and I want to do ti right!)
I’m having the same reservations. I’m interested in it, but the distant Jesus you can’t reach except through Mary is so different from the Jesus I know from the Bible. The big stumbling block for me is the idea that you have to go through Mary because anything given to Jesus will be spoiled by your sin, but anything given to Him through Mary becomes pure. That is so not the Jesus who walked the earth.
