This evening, the priest misspoke when he elevated the chalice, saying, “This is My Body…” He paused as though he realized that he made an error, but he didn’t correct himself. His intent was clear, but I don’t know if that is sufficient. I have been looking online for information about the validity of the Mass, but I see that there is no real consistency. Does anyone know the correct answer, not just an opinion? Thank you.

Unless he pronounced the proper words of consecration over the chalice, the Mass was invalid.

The linked article suggests that the consecration of the bread was valid, but not so with the wine. Mr. Akin does suggest, if I read his comments correctly, that I shouldn’t fret about it. Thank you for the link.

The Host was indeed consecrated, and if you received Holy Communion, then you received Our Lord. However, the Mass may still have been invalidated by the lack of form in the consecration of the chalice.

I am not an expert, but…It would not hurt to go to mass again Sunday…

If he quietly corrected himself, I wouldn’t have heard. But I can’t count on that. So am I obliged to go to Mass again tomorrow? And is this a sin that needs to be confessed? I’m kind of confused.

I’m not an authority but from what you described I would say that no you are not obliged to attend Mass again and no you did not commit any sin. I think that you can safely assume that it was a valid Mass, unless it can be definitively proved otherwise.

Thank you. I appreciate your answers. I will probably go to Mass again tomorrow. During my next confession, I will ask the priest about drinking the wine when it wasn’t properly consecrated. I hate to be pharisaical/scrupulous, but I do want to be faithful.
