I have a question I forgot to ask my priest the last time at confession. I have OCD so I get very anxious when I go. If someone committed a sexual mortal sin with someone and then confessed and has not sinned in that manner again, but sees this person in a work setting and chats with flirtation, does it become a mortal sin because of the past sin? I am not clear on this. Thank you.

I think it is very poor judgment since you are actually flirting with temptation! You may still be attracted to the person, but once you have been sexual it is VERY hard to roll things back. If you do decide to become involved, make sure to make it VERY clear that you must remain chaste.

If flirting itself is a sin, heaven will be a VERY VERY VERY empty place! 😃

It does not become a mortal sin based on past mortally sinful behaviors.

I think my question is: what is your intention of chatting and flirting with someone who you previously engaged in mortally sinful behavior? Are you setting yourself up for another fall? And taking someone else with you?

God bless you.

Thanks for your response. To answer your question, I am not intentionally seeking out to sin. I work with this person and as much as I try to avoid him it is an awkward situation not to talk once in a while. It is never outward flirting either, but rather subtle things. Believe me, I will never travel down that path again. Thank you for your answer and God bless you!

Deliberately and unnecessarily putting yourself in the occasion of mortal sin may be itself mortal in some circumstances (perhaps if it is a direct preliminary to the mortal sin, such as a man going to stroll about the red light district), but this doesn’t appear to qualify.
