I was enrolled by a priest after a mass at the covent of the Discalced Carmelite Nuns in Philadelphia about ten years ago. I stopped wearing the scapular and have not worn it for many years. I am not sure where that scapular even is anymore.

I’ve begun to return to the more traditional aspects of the faith and have a desire to wear the scapular again faithfully.

My question is - I recently purchased a wool brown scapular. Do I need to be re-enrolled or does my is my previous enrollment still valid? Does the scapular need to be blessed or can I just begin wearing it again?

Thanks,

Michael Meehan

You do not need to be re enrolled. Just start wearing your new scapular. It doesn’t need blessing however personally I like all sacramentals to be blessed so you may wish to just ask the priest to quickly bless your scapular after mass or during confession. God bless you.

If it’s a new scapular (a new sacramental that will be used for devotional purposes) then have it blessed like you would any other item.

  1. If I need a new Scapular, do I need to be re-invested?
No. If your Scapular has worn out or has broken, you only need to get another one and put it on. The blessing and investiture is still valid for the new Scapular, since the blessing is predominately given to the person who is invested in the Scapular.
