Question about what the members of the clergy wear on their heads?

I was watching the beautigul mass of the installation for the new Bishop of Indianapolis early this week. There were several men who I assume were priests but were not wearing tiaras, they were wearing crowns. What is the signifacance of the crown?

I think those were probably bishops from one or more of the non-Roman/Latin rites. They tend to wear what looks like a crown, rather than a wearing a mitre, which is a western custom.

Do you mean a mitre? Only the Pope ever wore a tiara, and there hasn’t been one made since Paul VI.

Without a link to check, Eastern catholic ‘crowns ’ are worn by Archimandrites , Mitred Arch Priests and Bishops. The Bishops’ mires have a small cross on top. These all are correctly called ’ mitres ’

This is technically incorrect. A tiara was made for, presented to, and accepted by Pope Benedict XVI last year, but he’s never been seen to wear it. I like to think he may have put it on in front of a mirror in private at some time.

Those would be the Eastern-rite bishops. They have some different types of traditional vestments than the Latin rite, including their headpieces.

But that was a private gift, and not used at his installation, or in any official function. The official use of the Papal Tiara ended with Paul VI.

Now, I’m all for bringing it back (along with the Pontifical High Mass, the Sedae Gestia, the whole 9 yards); but accepting a private gift of a tiara he’ll never wear doesn’t really qualify.

That’s why I only said it is technically incorrect to say that no Papal tiara has been made since the time of Paul VI. At least one has been made, but yes it has not been officially used in any way.

Its great that today such brotherhood exists between the different ritual churches. When His Beatitude Sviatoslav was in town, the Latin bishops from the entire province were invited to the Divine Liturgy he celebrated. So if there is an Episcopal event in the Latin Church like an ordination or installation or a visit, the Eastern bishops of the area are also invited.
