Question about working while in college

Hello I’m new here Ive read awhile and finely joined. I have a question. I am currently in college and am looking for a part time job for some extra cash so I can get a car. And I just want to know what do I do if I am hired and they schedule me to work on a Sunday? On my applications I m putting that Iam not available on Sundays. But some places still might schedule me for Sunday anyway. What should I do if that happens? Thanks

well first off it depends of what type of job you apply for. if you are wanting to be a lifeguard, fireman, emt, or some other necessary job then there is no reason to not work on a sunday.

secondly it depends on you, if this job is the difference between eating or not it would be ok to work sunday, but since you said you wanted it for a car i dont htink thats the case.

thirdly why not try to find a job that doesnt do business on sunday. not so easy but they’re out there. chick fila which had 3 places just on my campus and 2 more in town isnt open on sundays.
-personally my favorite job in college was one that never made me work sundays. i worked for texas boll weevile eradacation. any state that has otton farmers has a similiar orginazation. all you need is a drivers liscense and a clean drug test. you drive their truck(pickup not a big rig or anything) around checking traps at cotton fields. the pay was good, and they mostly had students as employees so they were very willing to work around schedules. just my 2cents but id say look them up and see if they have a nearby office.

I’d say that first off you need to have reasonable expectations when you apply for jobs. There are some kinds of part time jobs where it’s probably just expected that you will be available to work on Sundays. This is particularly true if you look for jobs with retail stores or restaurants that are normally open on Sundays. Of course if you put down on your application that you are not available on Sundays they should address that with you at the time you are interviewed. Make sure that any person who tells you that you don’t have to work Sundays has the authority to make such a statement.

Now if you are hired with the understanding that Sundays will be free you still may have to deal with the possibility that the person who makes up the schedule is not the person who hires you. You are going to have to be very upfront but polite about it and let this person know that you were hired under the condition that you don’t work on Sunday. Be prepared to be unpopular if this will make things difficult for the scheduler.

A lot of Catholics have no choice but to work on Sundays.If the only job you can make work with your schedule requires Sunday work then just make sure you do your best to attend Mass.

My mother works in a hospital and must work every other weekend. When she works on Sundays, she simply goes to mass on Saturday afternoon.

I worked all throughout college, and although I often requested not to work on Sundays, it happened anyway. I worked at Wal-Mart, and it was necessary for me to pay my bills. I always made sure I attended Mass, whether the evening before (on Saturday), Sunday morning, or Sunday evening, depending on what my work schedule was. If it’s necessary that you work, just ensure you make a good effort to get to Mass each week.

I always work on Sundays. I just make sure I get my butt to Mass either before or after, depending.

I am a college student too. It just happens like that. Especially since I am also the Catholic liaison to our school’s interfaith group and pregnancy center liaison for our pro-life group. I need to be involved, I need to study (most importantly), but I also need to cut down costs of where I go to school (which includes getting an apartment and paying rent that’s cheaper than living in a dorm).

That’s just how life is.

thats not something im use to. the dorms, at least the cheap ones were way cheaper than apartments. either way you make a valid point. we gotta do what we gotta do.

I’m working 2 jobs (36hr/wk) right now, and I was fortunate enough to be in a “good enough” financial position to not work on Sundays at all–and the reason was I needed at least SOME time to study!

For all of college I’ve worked about 20 hrs a week, and it was the kind of job where the schedule is set in stone, with the boss asking if anybody would like to cover the missing shift, on occasion. The library didn’t open til 1 on Sundays so that wasn’t a problem.

I did use to work at a Panera for some of my senior year, with a flexible schedule, what I did was to request Sunday morning to be free–but they needed me the most during the weekday (they really liked having a homeschooler on staff to fill the day hours!)

So, I really haven’t had that trouble of Sunday morning jobs. But as for my brother’s experience…they schedule him pretty much any time, including Sunday morning. Sometimes he goes to Saturday night Mass, or Sunday 7 AM Mass (which is only 45 min long so he can still get to work by 8:30 AM) or he’ll go to Mass on Sunday night. He’s flexible with it. And there have been times when he’s working on a play for school, and they had to tear down the set after the last play on Saturday nights until the wee hours of the morning. To catch up on sleep on Sunday mornings, he’d tell his friends, “Be back later” and go across the street to the parish for a 7 pm Sat night Mass.

So, I guess what I’m saying is, it will work out. Generally, for a part time job, they don’t usually have people pull 10+ hr shifts per day, so even if you worked on Sunday, go to a Sunday night Mass. That involves being flexible as to which parish you attend, might not be the one near school. Get a cab, if you must. And I’ve never seen anybody have the problem where they work Saturday nights and all day Sunday through all available Masses. That just doesn’t happen in most part time work. In the rare times you might do that, simply go to Mass on Monday! Or talk with the scheduler to see if you can take a long “lunch break” and go to noon Sunday Mass. After a while they’ll get the idea and make sure you have a Sat night or Sun morning free for church. It all works out in the end.

So, don’t worry about having to work on Sundays And besides, don’t count your chickens before they hatch! Get the job first, then worry about scheduling. And put down for the most available hours you possibly can, to increase your chances of getting the job. Official scheduling happens after you’re hired. And good luck job hunting!

Ask the apologists. I’m pretty sure we are not supposed to be scrupulous about lifting a finger on Sunday for pretty necessary things, which a car is, in this day and age… just my two cents.

Dorms at my school amount to a thousand a month. I can get an apartment with a friend and pay $500-$650 a month.

yeah my dorm was in the middle price range, i didnt get the cheap ones whit no a/c. but mine was room,a/c,water,power,cable, and internet for about $1000-1100 per semester, my first apartment i got after 4 years in the dorms was i think $480 a month(1500-1600/semester) with nothing included. so i guess we have pretty different reference points.
