Are you sure that what you heard was not a renewal of baptismal vows? We often get “liturgy police” these days that are so wont to nail a priest to the wall that they misinterpret what they see as abuse. One went so far as to call a 500 year old pentecost chant a “fruity hippy poem”.At a Catholic mass I attended in Mexico, the Credo was said in a question-and-answer format. Besides that, it lacked mentioning “Holy, Catholic, Apostolic,” the Virgin Mother, descent into hell, etc. It was so watered down that a liberal Protestant could agree with it. Is this permitted? Did the Mexican bishops allow this?
I don’t know anything about Mexican liturgy, but for whatever it’s worth Protestants – PCUSA, ELCA, et al. – do use the Nicene Creed, complete with the reference to the Virgin Mary, the one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church, and everything. This is what it sounded like, but it was like a barer than bare bones Nicene Creed. The renewal of baptismal promises starts of asking “Do you reject satan…?” etc. There was no full-length Nicene Creed at this non-Easter season Sunday mass.Are you sure that what you heard was not a renewal of baptismal vows?
