If the defeat of Lucifer is preordained, why would he even bother trying?

In the end , It is my understanding that The Church teaches that Satan himself will be tortured without end (Catechism of the Catholic Church #1035).

He will be subject to pain and never-ending torment. When Satan is burning in hell forever, he will not be able to have anymore influence on us in any way.

In the meantime I believe he takes great pleasure in taking as many of God’s children with him to that punishment of eternal fire.

Satan will not overcome heaven, but he will not lose Hell. Though a smaller dominion is not victory, it is not illogical to pursue. With regard to each of the damned, Satan is the victor.

I disagree. Satan will not rule in hell, he will be the lowest in it. The taking of more souls does not glorify him like he wishes, instead it does just the opposite: It makes him more and more of a loser. The more souls he takes from God, the more he is rightfully condemned.(not to say he is not rightly condemned already). He continues out of pure pride. He will never admit that he has lost all possible glory.

It’s just a clear example of just how much sin can cloud our reasoning.

Because of this, it can be reasoned that Satan would rather reign in hell than serve in heaven.

Satan does not accomplish or receive true glory; but he does rule.

It is Satan’s rule that makes Hell what it is. It is the demons who torture and punish. They do this because it is their version of rule – they are merciless. This malice focused on the weaknesses of the damned, thus on the locus of their sins, which constitutes the punishment of sins, and forms the ordered terror of Hell. Thus, by doing their wills, the demons serve Divine Justice against their wills. This enrages Satan, leaving him in perpetual rage and pain, but unable to change. Satan takes no pleasure in his reign.

This is a great warning for men, who believe that their rule can succeed. The Kingdom of God is not a whimsy of God; it is the only form of order that can succeed perpetually.

Hence, he who seeks to rule by his own lights creates his own hell. Nevertheless, these “personal hells” do not remain separate or personal, as some modern images would suggest. Satan is voracious and imperial. His Hell underlies and ultimately encompasses them all. He is the “bringer of light” (Lucifer) who opened the way for these willful constructs that are “hell” for those oppressed by them.

This “mutual self-torture” of the damned is the key to understanding how Hell can exist as it does. This is a point missed by certain modern “critics” of the Church, who claim that a loving God would not construct Hell. They dispute the existence of Hell, on the ground that God would be a sadistic torturer, if it existed. However, the primary punishment of Hell is to allow the damned to live under the administration devised by the damned. The damned do not leave each other alone, and the demons dominate with their pure malice the minor fiends, who cause pain in their turn, etc.

If hell is preordained for those who commit serious sin, why aren’t all believers saints by now? If everyone knows they’re going to die, why don’t more people seek truth more earnestly-or wait until the end before they take death seriously? Pride goes to huge extents to convince us that we’re invincible. Anyway, those might be some related thoughts.
