Hello everyone!

I am getting married next year and have a question regarding my best man. Based on what I have read on the definition of a “best man”, I have realized that my sister fills this role. She is my best friend and confidant and I don’t know of anyone else who would be better suited for this role.

My future wife is a Maronite and I am Roman Catholic. We will be getting married in a Maronite chuch and her cousin, who is a Priest will be marrying us.

Is there any issues with this request?

In a very traditional sense (and my 1911 etiquette book confirms this) the Bridal Entourage is to be women only, and the Groomsmen are to be men, only.

HOWEVER, one of my best friends is getting married in about a year, and she said she could not imagine me not being part of the wedding party. I have no special relationship with her fiance to warrant me being a groomsmen, so she’s having me in her entourage. I’ll have the best tux in the place except for the groom. Most colorful, at any rate.

This is, however, going to be a non-religious wedding, so I cannot speak for any official Maronite position. I don’t think I would be able to conform to my friend’s wishes if she were getting married in the Church out of my own sense of propriety, but for what it’s worth, I wanted to share my example.

Remember, also, that the conventional wedding form including each of its participants developed out of traditions that explicitly segregated men and women.

there is no such thing as a “best man” or “maid of honor” in the Catholic rite of matrimony. What there is are two lay witnesses in addition to the presider. When you decide which rite you are going to be married in and start marriage preparation is the time to address who those witnesses will be.
