Angels have no sex because they are not biological creatures, but spirit. So they can manifest themselves in any way God wills them to, whether male, female, non-human, or even non-living.

I concur on the last post.
Angels are spiritual and are depicted as humans in paintings because that’s how they’ve appeared and it’s easier for us to relate to them. Angels have no gender whatsoever.

Angels have appeared as male (I do not picture Jacob wrestling with a feminine angel! ). Are there any traditions of them appearing as female? I personally prefer art that represents angels as masculine and soldierly.

Good question. I have seen female representations of angels, but these were modern (1900s).

There certainly are powerful females! But the stereotype of strength and power has historically been masculine.

Angels, being non-somas, can only be represented figuratively in art.

I concur with the posts that say angels are spirit hence they have no sex. They have taken a male form in the bible but they are still spirit and not biological creatures. The apocalypsis/ezequiel/ot do describe the appearance of some angels though and the description is not even close to a human shape: four faces, lion, ox, covered with eyes etc.

I’m not sure if Angels are either masculine or feminine. I know you’re not
talk-ing \about biologic-sexual difference, but that more psychologic-gen-
der difference. I do recall from learning about certain ceremonial magick
that some angels are feminine, such as Gabriel, Auriel, etc, but I do not
think that fits in with reality.

In their book “Heavenly Army of Angels” Bob and Penny Lord refer to angels as having masculine bodies and almost feminine faces (IIRC). If gender is taken out of this it could be said their appearance is having strong bodies and beautiful faces.

A little girl was playing with her dolls and stuffed toy animals. She had made little sets of wings for all the dolls and teddy bears. Her mother asked her what she was doing and she replied: “I’m making angels. This is Angel Janie, and this is Angel Mary, and this is Teddy Angel Susie.”

Mom said: “How sweet but, why no boy angels?”

The little girl looked at her mom with a puzzled look and said: “Oh really mother…there’s no such thing as a boy angel.”

There you have it, out of the mouths of babes. Sorry guys!

Oh, I took his comment as meaning that Jacob would find that sort of physical interaction with a member of the opposite sex unthinkable.

Later on in the OT, in Leviticus, there is the prohibition on men and women touching, which excludes all touching, not just romantic touching.

Fun stuff! 😃

Angels are spirits, and so do not need to have the primary and secondary characteristics of a body that reproduces. So, there are no breasts filling out the front of robes, no beards, and ,no doubt, no genitals either. Therefore their faces would be more gracile as they don’t have testosterone coursing through bodies, to coarsen their features.

Even though Angels are pure spirit, hence no sexual characteristics, I relate to my guardian angel as a Male, just makes me feel safer for some reason. 👍

In the Orthodox iconographic tradition, angels are always carefully depicted as sexless, i.e. without any specific defining features of one gender. So for example they do not have beards (a male feature), nor do they have breasts (a female feature). Here’s an example:
