No. I do not disregard everything they taught. This is a common myth amongst Catholics, about Protestants where they think this kind of thing.I agree, the bible has proven to be a historical book, but it even took more then the bible to understand biblical times.
so Protestant101, out of curiosity, do you disregard all that our early church fathers ( after the deaths of Jesus’s apostles) has taught?
For a personal example; since I came to Jesus; and joined His Remnant Church, which was 20+ years ago now, I have had a card board book mark in my main study Bible. It is actually a bookmark that was put out by Al Anon; but on the one side it has a prayer on it that they entitled: “Prayer For Today.” I think it was St Francis of Assissi (is that spelled right?), who originated the prayer:
"Lord, make me an instrument of Thy peace
Where there is hatred, let me sow love
where there is injury, pardon
where there is doubt, faith
where there is despair, hope
where there is darkness, light
and where there is sadness, joy
O Divine Master, grant that I
may not so much seek to be
consoled, as to console
to be understood, as to understand
to be loved, as to love
For it is in giving that we receive
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned
and it is in dying that we are
born to eternal life."
So, yes, there are some things that “the early Church Fathers taught,” which I heartily adopt into my Christian pilrimage here on this Earth. But, even with this prayer; I found it my duty to make one small correction on the bookmark with a red-ink pen. The last two lines, where it says “it is in dying that we are born to eternal life,” I inserted “it is in dying to self.”
Now, on a similar vein, when we talk about the true “Early Fathers of The Church;” I find that it is more likely these can be read about in the Old Testament of The Holy Bible.
When I read something from the Pioneers of The Catholic Church, as I prefer to call what you say are “early Church Fathers,” and their teachings are not found in the Bible; I get out the red ink pen and make the needed corrections. :coffeeread:
