I am mostly a lurker here and throw a shot in or 2 now and again but… I ask myself and others no matter what your Faith… Do you come on this board (non Catholic religions) to

A) Save Souls???
B) sinful pride???
C) truely defend your faith???

I ask because heated arguments sometimes feel as though they have no point but only to argue out of pride…🤷

guilty

I’m here to get a better understanding of my beliefs, based on trying to understand other people’s beliefs. Being Jewish, there are lots of people here with fundamentally different views of the Old Testament, how the Messiah is defined, and so on.

I will admit, that there are times when I want to yell out (virtually) “That isn’t what the text means! Someone is twisting the meaning/translation in hindsight to support their view!” but that isn’t appropriate here on a Catholic Forum, never leads to very interesting conversations, and certainly is in the category of “sinful pride”. So instead I take try and see it as a learning experience.

Not all Catholics are really serious about their faith. I come here because even though I’m a relatively new Catholic, I know more about the faith than a lot of cradle Catholics.

I come here for support, fellowship, to learn, and to share. Catholic Answers Forums and Radio is one of the best support systems I have seen. I agree though that some of the arguments get heated. Chalk it up to the same old problem that has always plagued forums and bulletin boards. When you are just typing and responding to text, it’s easy to fire things off, hit send, and then wish you hadn’t done it.

We should all remember that there is a person behind the text and to speak the truth in love.

Um, none of the above.

I come here to talk, and pm with some old friends.

At first, I came here to mingle with my then fellow Catholics. Now that I’m Agnostic, I just come here for entertainment or the sake of argument. There are times, however, that I have had to defend nonbelievers (Agnostics included).

Largely out of:

  • D) Intellectual curiosity
And B); & also C) - (I think). And also to do what I can (not *that *is much :D) to clear up misunderstandings about the Church of England  (there are certain posters who are excellent at this)

I agree with Gottle of Geer’s D) Intellectual curiosity.
I’ll also add
E) I might have an answer to someone’s question, such as "What do other faiths believe about . . . ? By stating a belief, I then also have challenged myself to support it Biblically. I recognize others may disagree, but their disagreements may cause me to adjust the way I present my support for my position in the future. Mostly though, my intent is simply to “explain” why I believe something rather than trying to “defend” why I believe it. I think there is an inherent difference in intensity between explaining and defending.

None of the above. Although shouldn’t ‘A’ be everyone’s ultimate goal?

Anyways I come to this specific section on the CAF to learn about other faiths. I’m going to be honest, I am only really concerned about other Christian faiths. Although some of the information I learn about those faiths outside of Christendom is a nice bonus. Anyways while doing this I sometimes fall into ‘C’ which sometimes leads to ‘B’ and all the while hoping that my remarks can be used by the Holy Spirit for ‘A’ :o

God bless

Fish Is Good,
I haven’t noticed your name in the threads I have posted to, so I don’t know if you want an answer from my perspective, but here goes:
I happened here from a google search on a topic related to my beliefs, and felt there was a lot of room for misunderstanding when I began reading parts of this website and the forum. I would rather have people understand my religion than misunderstand it, because often misunderstanding leads to unwarranted bad feelings or ill will, and why let that happen if you can try and help to prevent it or at least to decrease it in some way?

I think a follower of Christ wants to help others be more forgiving, more respectful, more unitedly seeking to do good things in this vast and wonderful world. I have sought to encourage Bible-reading and Bible-living, and to avoid contention yet still be forthright in the process.

Curiosity mostly, reading posters like Paul Dupre, and putting words to my faith. I mostly just read, but sometimes I post a reply when I feel a reply could be helpful.

I’m here to learn and to contribute to productive conversation. I’ve been quite interested in Catholocism in particular since I studied the New Testament with Raymond Brown’s “Introduction to the New Testament.”

Hello fishisgood Ha I believe we have met before…I agree wholeheartedly that I am a lurker here too and throw in a shot or 2 or3 or4 ha ha.

But seriously Yes you are also quite correct on what our Motive should be in this Forum…Saving Souls is what Christianity is all about even if we try and ‘poach’ from other denominations now and again…

Yes and to truly defend our faith also…3 cheers for fishisgood…we agree with each other on this one…Michael.👍

Ha… I was wondering when you would post on this thread. Indeed saving souls should be the motivation:thumbsup:

In other forum , I asked about Catholics believe. All Christians were non-Catholics . One gave me links of 2 Catholic sites. U may say that I came here to know about Catholics . But when I saw sooooooooo many anti-Islamic threads are here , then I started explaining Islam .

It’s sad that I don’t have time to visit Catholic Answeres forum …too busy in non-Catholic section.

hello the other lurker is back…I would like to say that at the end of the day whatever faith we espouse, Christian, Jewish, Islam…our primary purpose should be to make this world a better place huh, by treating others as we would like to be treated eh?

Sure, we can discuss and debate, but hopefully just by being on this planet help to guide it in the right direction…back towards the Creator, even though evolutionists laugh at us…

Not seen any evolutionist threads on this Forum, that gives me hope!! ‘The fool has said in his heart there is no God’.😉

Loving greetings to all. Michael.

I’m amazed that those are the only three reasons you can think of. I can think of many more.

For me, I enjoy talking religion. Also, I left the Catholic church a year and a half ago when I lost my faith, but I have many good memories and no animosity, and , well, I miss it. So I’m here for my catholic “fix.” I can’t go to church for eucharist, so this is kind of the next best thing. 🙂

I’m sure that sometimes the arguments do get out of hand, but I think you might be surprised that most of the time they are being enjoyed by those engaging in them. They are simply a different learning modality than you. Many of us learn best through this “iron sharpens iron” technique. You know, in Jewish culture, argument is the normative way of learning. It is not uncommon to walk the streets of Jerusalm and see two Talmidim in heated debate – and yet in the evening they will likely be sharing a meal in warm friendship, for they are study buddies. So… argument is not your thing. That’s okay too.

Sorry to hear that Prodigal Son…and I mean this, as long as you believe in Lord Jesus Christ you can take Communion in almost any Protestant Church, Anglican would be the easiest I would say…even Seventh-day Adventist would welcome you.

The Bread of Life, the Water of Life, the Body of Christ, the Word that became Flesh and dwelt amongst us is available. Unless you eat My Flesh and Drink my Blood you will never see the Kingdom of heaven…drink the Water of Life, Eat the Bread of Life, like Lord Jesus offered the Samaritan women at the well, he offered her the Water of Life and she would never thirst again. We must eat the Bread of Life every day.

‘Man shall not live by bread alone but by every Word that comes from the Mouth of God.’

With respect to the blasphemies of the Roman Catholic Church, the misinterpretation of Scripture by those church fathers they go on about…

I apologise to all Roman Catholics, it is the System I am talking about…may God bless all here…Michael.

Yes totally agree…argue and debate all day and then share a fellowship meal in warm friendship…yes that is perfect, and I extend that to every Roman Catholic and others on this Forum.!!!

May God bless all here. Michael.👍

I come to learn and to impart my limited knowledge, but NEVER to argue. I feel that arguimg causes more damage and emnity than anything else. I respect the other person’s
belief(s) and will listen (read) to his/her side of the story and then I will present mine if I think if he/she is in error. If not, or if I do not have a valid point to make I admit it and shut up, although many times my pride takes over. That’s it. Correct me if I’m wrong, please.

Yes Argue is a harsh word, debate, is better, we love each other, but we debate and discuss.

Shalom. Peace to all. Michael.👍
