Question for Americans

Sadly, WSJ has everything behind a paywall unless you are a subscriber. It doesn’t even offer a couple free articles a month. So those of us who don’t subscribe can’t read that.

That’s usually the case. But I’m not a subscriber and I was able to click through the subscription ad to the article.

I guess I’ve never heard of the stereotype that they’re naturally trustworthy. I would have thought that the casino-owner stereotype would override that.

That said, Native Americans do tend to be looked at sympathetically. In terms of racially-based discrimination, they’ve suffered among the worst, and due to the stereotype of them being good with nature.

While I’m generally in favor of free speech for everybody, I do think that sending high school students to go explore DC unsupervised in a bunch of MAGA gear was not a bright move on the part of the school or the parents. It basically makes the kids targets for those who dislike Trump, who are legion in DC. If it were my school and I made the rules, I’d tell the kids that the dress code for the trip is school sweatshirts, t-shirts, hats only, nothing else. Some of the groups did have their students all dressed in the same school gear and it not only looks good marching and makes it easier to keep track of each other, but it also doesn’t make you a target.

If adults want to run around town in MAGA gear, fine, they’re grownups, they can handle it, but these are kids. People have been attacked for wearing a MAGA hat in the wrong place in DC.
So does that mean we stop wearing our crucifixes or carrying our rosary beads as well?

First of all, you know that’s not a fair comparison in the USA today. No one gets beat up or criticized for wearing a cross or even the Rosary (unless it’s a gang thing where one lives). I wear a rosary many days everywhere I go, because I am praying on it in the car, and no one says anything except “hey nice rosary, where can I get one like that”.

MAGA Hats are hardly on a level with the rosary or a cross. Half the Catholics don’t even support Trump. I know you love the guy from your past posts, but please be realistic. Also, political speech and religious practice are differently treated under US law; the law might make an accommodation for someone to wear a crucifix or a yarmulke with their uniform, but they’re not going to make an exception to wear a MAGA hat or an “I’m with Her” button.

Second of all, if we were in serious physical danger from wearing a crucifix - and there are countries where this is the case - neither the Church nor God expects us to go around wearing them. Even the early Christian martyrs met in secret; the church in Japan went underground for centuries, the church in China is partly underground today, and there are countries where you don’t go around sporting your Christian gear because it’s dangerous. People need to use common sense.

I don’t LOVE the guy, but he is our president
and is doing his best to lead our country in
spite of the vicious opposition.
Some of the young people obviously like Trump and wore the hats. Why should they be bullied not to wear the hats?
The unhinged left loves the power of controlling what we are allowed to say or
wear.
There is nothing wrong with what the letters MAGA stand for unless people are looking for another excuse to hate Trump and the left has created the craziness surrounding all this.
