In Acts 15 it says to avoid blood and meat of strangled animals

Acts 15:20
“but tell them by letter to avoid pollution from idols, unlawful marriage, the meat of strangled animals, and blood.”

I could be wrong but I dont know one bible christian church that avoids meat of strangled animals and from blood

So If your a bible only Christian what is the reason for following only what some of the bible says but leaving key passages out such as this?

Where in the bible does it say you can now eat meat of strangled animals and that you can come in contact with blood?

Im just confused so here is your chance to enlighten us Catholics 🙂

Umm… I am Catholic but I will field this one.

I think a Bible Only Christian would respond, correctly too, that this instruction is referring to animals that were sacrificed as part of pagan worship.

Even if you were going to insist on the literal interpretation of the words chosen in English, you would realize that no animals are butchered by strangling. In oder times, they were stabbed or had their throats cut. Modern food processors either electrocute them or use a pneumatic punch to the brain.

Good point let’s focus on the blood part then. We know he is talking about blood Jews could not eat blood whatsoever as far as I know. Correct me if I’m wrong.

So why are bible Christians now alowed to do this?

Who says they are? I do not eat blood.

Ok rpp you prefer your meat well done not rare not even medium rare thats good news:thumbsup:

but lets see

Im going to assume you purge your meat and soak it in cold water for 30 or so minutes and cover it with coarse salt for an hour and even broil it until the color changes in which all this process will draw out the blood of the animal in the meat

All this Jews must do and you seem to do yourself 😃

so anybody besides rpp Do you eat meat rare or medium rare does your Chruch teach that we should avoid rare meat as the bible says we should be doing?

If not how can you call yourself sola scripture?

Hello Odell,

I just brought this up in another thread because a protestant stated it was against the old covenant to consume blood (Leviticus 17:10-14), therefore Christ would not have broken the law by telling His apostles to drink his blood. We tried to explain that Christ was the new covenant but the protestant said the new covenant had not come since Christ had not died yet.

So as rpp said, I will field this one.

Mar 7:15 There is nothing from without a man that entering into him can defile him. But the things which come from a man, those are they that defile a man.
Mar 7:16 If any man have ears to hear, let him hear.
Mar 7:17 And when he was come into the house from the multitude, his disciples asked him the parable.
Mar 7:18 And he saith to them: So are you also without knowledge? Understand you not that every thing from without entering into a man cannot defile him:
Mar 7:19 Because it entereth not into his heart but goeth into his belly and goeth out into the privy, purging all meats?
Mar 7:20 But he said that the things which come out from a man, they defile a man.
Mar 7:21 For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders,
Mar 7:22 Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness.
Mar 7:23 All these evil things come from within and defile a man.

May the peace of the Lord be with you.

Hey rpp,

As I mentioned, I was in a debate with a protestant and explained the very thing you mentioned here. It was a pagan ritual to sacrifice say, a bull, then drink it’s blood to get strength from the bull’s spirit. Which is like worshipping a false God.

He denied that was what it meant and wanted to know if it was Catholic doctrine.

I heard it in a Bible study group and was going to get the specifics next study. It was an endorsement of the Real Presence and the reasoning of why the Lord instructed us to receive His body and blood in communion.

May the peace of the Lord be with you.

I knew this verse would come up snd it is a great verse especially how you used it in the othe thred

We both know that nothing defiles us of what we eat

And we know the author of Acts would have known this. But it does not negate the fact that the bible says we are to abstain from blood

As Catholics we abstain from meat on Fridays we know its not because meat defiles us. we in the united states have been loosend by every Friday and now only abstain during lent but should give up something on Friday.

Now the bible tells us to abstain from blood nothing in the bible has loosend this. so a bible Christian should not eat anything with blood

Catholics however don’t have to. we can save the WHY for later
I want to know what sola scripture people have to say

Thanks prodical son

It’s actually where Christ did away with the necessity to eat only “kosher” food, by making all food clean. (shellfish, pork, etc.)

No one that eats meat can avoid consuming blood, unless they buy only kosher meat that has been processed to remove the blood. You sure aren’t getting kosher burgers at the burger joints in the US. 😉

May the peace of the Lord be with you.

In the Old Testament there is specific reference to meat with the blood in it. The prohibition in Acts would not exclude meat with blood in it as it speaks only of eating blood. ie blood as a separate food.

Even if you do not accept the above, reference must be had to context and the rest of the Bible. In Galatians 2 Paul mentions nothing of any dietary prohibitions as a result of the Jerusalem meeting so apparently they no longer applied. Acts is dealing with relations between Jewish converts and Gentile converts. Eating blood would offend the Jewish converts. Throughout his epistles Paul makes it clear that while nothing is unclean that if it gives offence to another we should not do it. As Paul says all is clean and that we are not to allow anyone to judge us as to food, it is apparent that the prohibition of blood was not permanent but a temporary accomodation. This is made particularly clear as in Mark 7:19 where we are told Jesus declared all foods clean.

Strangling at that time consisted of breaking the neck of the animal, and then eating it.

The Jews had been instructed to slit the throat of the animal, and to drain the blood; that’s still practiced today in slaughterhouses, in which the animal is eviscerated, and the empty carcass is hung and cured, and the blood is drained.

You are quite confused, IMO. :rotfl:**Romans 14:14-16

I know and am convinced in the Lord Jesus that nothing is unclean in itself; but to him who thinks anything to be unclean, to him it is unclean.

For if because of food your brother is hurt, you are no longer walking according to love. Do not destroy with your food him for whom Christ died.
Therefore do not let what is for you a good thing be spoken of as evil;**The Christian is to abstain from anything if that which he does, though good, causes his brother to stumble.

If you had kept reading in Acts 15, you would have come to v21, which states:**Acts 15:21

“For Moses from ancient generations has in every city those who preach him, since he is read in the synagogues every Sabbath.”**Let me explain what is being said in that verse: James prohibits the eating of things offered to idols, and things strangled as a concession of the Gentile Christians to the Jewish Christians so that the Gentile Christians are not causing the Jewish Christians to stumble (see my statement concerning that from Rom 14 above).

Once again, Odell, “nothing is unclean in itself” (Rom 14); the restrictions James placed upon the Gentiles in Acts 15 were a concession to the sensibilities of the Jewish Christians.

I still don’t see where I am confused I know nothing defiles us I know why the writer chose to instruct us not to eat blood but where in the bible does it say we can now eat meat with blood?

I remember Tim Staples using this same line of reasoning on the radio

So I may be going about this all wrong

Or I miss heard Tim

The bigger question is how they claim to be “Bible-believing” when they eschew the flesh and blood of the Lord, and do not consume it as he bid us do in John 6.

This answer demonstrates that you know virtually nothing about the preparation of a steak and what the “juices” of meat really are.

My son is a chef and We have discussed this frequently. In addition, your snarky tone was quite condescending and, therefore, uncharitable.

First off I want to apologize I may have taken you the wrong way and I got offended you didn’t make me feel to smart and I reacted the wrong
Sorry

However I doubt your son is a kosher chef and the method I explained on how to prepare the meat is exactly how the Jews would pepare a meal

Again I’m sorry for being so snarky

Some indians(American) as well as some cannibal tribes ate the meat, heart, blood etc. of their enemies because the enemy had been brave in battle and by eating of his flesh they would become more brave.
Blood was considered in Judaism as the life principal of the animal or person. By drinking the blood one would become like the original owner of the blood. In other words take on the life of the animal or other person. Hence the prohibition against eating blood in Scripture.

Most people today would not believe that if we eat blutwurst made from pork blood or Polish blood soup made with the blood of ducks or geese, we would become like one of those animals. Certainly the amino acids and fats do become a part of our bodies, so in a sense we do become what we eat, but it does not change our life principal which we now, if we are Christians, believe is the soul.

How appropriate in the light of these ancient beliefs of aboriginal peoples, that Jesus should give us his body and blood to eat so that we may become more and more like him. In this case we do indeed become what we eat.

To eat the body, blood, soul, and divinity of Jesus raises our human nature so that we can share in the divine life of the trinity. (paragraph 460 of CCC.) 🙂

This is true, then they hang them upside down so the blood can drain out, so they can sell it as blood meal for animal food and plant food. Blood meal is one of the most popular feeds for bulb plants. 😦

Good question. I’ve found some answers to this in the little book “Animals, Ethics & Christianity: Do Nature and Christianity Share the Same God?” by Matthew Priebe. I can send a copy to anyone if they send $1.00 to Catholic Concern for Animals, P.O. Box 266, Wayne, NJ 07474 with your address. I would be happy to send it to you. It’s easy to read and very reasonable/logical and Scriptural. According to Priebe, concerning the necessity to abstain from blood preceded the Levitical law by approximately 1000 years. Acts 1:28:29 and St. Paul’s reaffirmation in Acts 21:25 shows that “…the divine mandate never to eat blood was continued as a vital aspect of the Christian life. It was only during the Middle Ages that apostate Christianity ignored this as they ignored so many other of the Bible’s teachings.”
He goes on to explain why.
