Iā€™ve had some issues with low hemoglobin that I believe were caused by giving too frequently over the years, but if you havenā€™t given in years it sounds like a safe bet. Theyā€™ll check your hemoglobin levels right there on the spot. Plus, depending on where you go, they check your blood for COVID-19 antibodies for free.

Thatā€™s a red cell donation. If youā€™re not sure, you might call and see if they do them. It takes special equipment. We did them all the time but by appointment only as it takes much longer than a typical donation.

Thanks for remembering to donate again! It really does save lives! ā¤ļø

I canā€™t donate blood except unexpectedly.

As I wait, or when I know itā€™s going to happen, my blood pressure and stress go up, to the point Iā€™m visibly not well.

So when I find myself driving by one, or one of the mobile units, I stop in and see if they can take me immediately.

When I was teaching college, I told the students to come and get me, but not to tell me ahead of time. After a couple foyers, they usually even had a table set aside just in case . . .

I just checked the Red Cross web site and the restrictions still stand. I was stationed in England for three years from 1983-1986. I used to give blood regularly, but a long time ago got a letter from the Red Cross telling me not to give anymore for this reason. It was pretty rude wording, actually. I guess they wanted to get my attention.

I tried that a few times - it takes at least an hour ā€œin the chairā€, while I can complete a whole blood donation in about 15 minutes ā€œin the chairā€.

It may have been coincidence, but every time I did the red blood cell donation, I developed cold-like symptoms that lasted about a week. Eventually, I just went back to whole blood.

Let us know how it went. Thanks for donating.
Well, I passed the temperature, pulse, BP, and iron level checks, so for the last hour of my workday I got to open a vein and eat cookies. šŸŖ
Am now 1 pint shy of 10 gallons
More or less. I have 79 donations on record with this agency, but some of those were double-red or platelet donations, so I donā€™t know how they count. Also Iā€™ve donated a time or three through a different agency in another part of the state.
