Why do you use Protestant P&W songs in your services?

I used to be a charismatic Protestant and I don’t understand the appeal of this music compared to the Catholic tradition (not the STL jesuit stuff, mind you, or maybe P&W stacked against the jesuits is more appealing to folks).

I am not sure how you differentiate them - do you mean selecting music that denies something Catholics believe?

I am not a “Charismatic” Catholic in the sense of belonging to a charismatic prayer group or even in the sense of enjoying the gifts we generally describe as “charismatic.” However, in the Charismatic prayer meetings I have attended, no Mass was involved. It was essentially the Liturgy of the Word (based on the readings for the following Sunday) with some free-form prayer. In such a setting, P&W music “works” for those who attend. It does not have the same anti-liturgical effect as it would in a Mass.

A LOT of people (much to my incredulity) really respond to this kind of music, and it seems to “work” for them. Not my cup of tea. But then, it doesn’t have to be my cup of tea. As long as we’re not banging the bongos during Mass, I can live and let live.

I agree- any sort of orthodox music can and should be used outside of Mass if it helps people. Parish halls need to be used for…well, parish events. Concerts, prayer services, etc, are good. Charismatic worship and modern music have no place in the Mass. Anywhere else, go for it, and God bless.

the purpose of choosing music with simple, repeated, almost chant-like lyrics with easily learned music for a charismatic prayer meeting is to obviate the need for song sheets or booklets, or canters and music leaders. this way the worshippers are focused on the receptivity to the Spirit rather than being distracted by music aids. some of the music has in fact been written by Catholics. Most of the lyrics are very basic often taken directly from scripture, esp. psalms, so there are few doctrinal issues. this type of P&W worship music is by the way different from most “contemporary Christian” played on radio stations today, although most Christian music stations have time slots devoted to P&W.

This is too funny…in the 80’s when I used to attend Protestant Charismatic churches and go to their prayer meetings much of what they sang was music written by Catholics! I used to hear comments like this from Catholics–“They like to bash our Church, but then they “steal” our music”.

I guess times have changed…
