Alright this is my question for the Christians of the Syriac, Chaldean, Antiochene, and Alexandrian Rites.

First of all, what do you call the Almighty God the Father in Arabic and in your Liturgical languages? Because a friend of mine is saying that “Allah” means “Cursed” in Classical Hebrew and thinks Allah is in fact the Devil in disguise misleading everyone using a false name. Anyone can answer me?

I have to say that I cannot trust Wikipedia, it can be edited at any time. I am asking you Christians of the mentioned Rites to please answer my question.

The Wikipedia article is correct. Allah is the term Arabic speaking Christians use for God.

I think Allah is linguistically related to the Hebrew word El.

Here is an interesting article on the term as used in Malaysia by the Catholic church.

And a followup

This is not helping me, no offense to anyone but I want an answer, direct answer because I am trying to prove to my friend that “Allah” is not the Devil whom Muslims pray to. What I want is a honest answer not links not articles, a direct and honest answer. “What do Arab Christians call the Almighty God” in Arabic. It’s all I am asking for. Not links and articles, all I want is a direct and honest answer.

I’m not clear why our answers last week to your question and the answers here weren’t satisfactory.
I’ve certainly heard Allah used in ECCs.
Allah, amongst the Syrians.
That’s the Arabic word…

I know its another wiki but its the Orthodox Christian version of wikipedia (so at least someone is using “Allah” as “God”)

orthodoxwiki.org/Trisagion

At the very least it has a version of the Trisagion prayer from the Divine Liturgy transliterated from Arabic:

Quddouson Allââh, Quddouson ul-qawee, Quddouson ulladhee la yamout, Irhamna
قدوس الله، قدوس القوي، قدوس الذي لا يموت ارحمنا
Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us.

Thank you all for the information, I will be sure to show my friend this information and make her think twice before saying. Thank you all.

Hello Kitsune633,
This is not helping me, no offense to anyone but I want an answer, direct answer because I am trying to prove to my friend that “Allah” is not the Devil whom Muslims pray to.
Just a friendly comment. I am not exactly sure that the Muslims pray to the devil, that is an assertion that has to first be supported, so I will not agree to the assumption. I am not taking the position that the Muslim’s Allah is God either, I am just pointing out that the assumption is not going to be automatically supported by someone just because they may skip over that terminology without comment.

If your discussion was via internet, or possibly email or IM, you could quote the relevant paragraphs in the discussion here and the participants here can address them more fully. Of course, if you are satisfied that the responses here have been adequate I am glad, I hope it works out positively for you.

Having studied Hebrew, both as a protestant and as a Catholic, I can tell everyone that in no form of Hebrew does the term Allah refer to the Devil (Satan,. the lost Angel, or any of the other myriad of names attached to him).

The person who posted this subject does not want an answer, he wants top provoke argument, ans to promote his own weird views…

if people can’t answer a question civily then you will not get any positive responses back… why do i even bother sometimes. I went to school for this & no matter how far fetched the question was I was never criticized for it… theirs no such thing as a dum question its the tone of the person who answers the question.

since i belive the quran is messed up enough as it is I do believe that Muhammad twisted the meanings around its possible, hes done it to entire book that would be the bible made 600 years before the quran. in stating in the bible that it must never be copied altered & infringed in anyway.

& when you twist & corrupt the bible you get books like the quran. try to find the word “LOVE” in the quran & I might take back the whole thing. I know it says peace but Im stating does it say “Love”. .?

so I do not have any respect for a religion that per motes hate & intolerance…

If people don’t ask questions & state there mind there self censoring themselves… but answering a question civilly & not thinking your trying to per mote an argument will go far.

positive tones & minds always go far.

this is a religion forum questions like this are expected… if people can’t take a question lightly instead of provoking negative energy upon themselves. it will only cause an argument…

& I don’t defend those who dont believe Jesus is the son of God.

people of other faith who deny Jesus to be Gods son. I was taught by family to correct them. & hope they soon see the light…

Jesus is the truth the light & the salvation for all mankind.

Free speech is not negotiable & the internet is free game other wise… i came on the internet to learn & educate myself since i can no longer attend school now that im graduated. 2 years ago Class 2008.

However asking a question is no excuse for all the negative feed back here & even one response assumed the questioner was trolling… how immature of them to be on a religious forum i would expect questions like this… but no matter.its my thoughts on the questions & replies themselves…

I have a link to Arabic Christians youtube channel I think some might be interested in… this person is Arabic christian faith & could possibly be a Copt or orthodox Christian im not sure… but he does have the common since & courage to speak out the words of God to those misled…

This is my opinion on this situation & the tone of this situation im not stating any debating on anyone here whis will be my only post here … if you have a question i will answer but ask me civily because negative questioners I will not answer. .

As I said, YOU want to post your concepts, not truly ask questions. That’s fine, you have the perfect right to do that.

But, it is an attempt to disguise what you are trying to say, when you disguise your ideas behind a question that you will not accept any answer to, except for your own.

You have the right to think anything about the Muslim religion that you choose to believe.

I would however like to point out that is is beliefs like yours that create much of the friction between Christians and Muslims, and that have resulted in tens of thousands of deaths over the past few years alone.
