Question for hiring managers

If I apply for a job, and I actually have the name of the person in HR or the hiring manager, and I call to confirm they received my resume, how is it seen? Does it appear like someone who has ambition? Or is it an annoyance in the person’s already busy day?

Also, here is the catch. I know this person has viewed my profile on LinkedIn. Which in a way embarrasses me because I have no contacts. It is just there since head hunters will not deal with you unless you are on linkedin. (I have a personal dislike of social media but that is another post). Also, there is no information on linkedin that is not on my resume.

So, obviously, this person did receive my resume. It caught her attention enough to look me up. Should I leave it at that?

I think it depends on how you ask about the resume.

If you sound whiney or desperate, or like you’re trying to brown-nose, I think it would be annoying.

But if you keep your voice friendly and helpful, I think it would be a plus in your favor. It shows that you really care about the manager’s time and the company’s need for a new employee.

There’s nothing you can do about companies checking social media. It’s understood that they will do this. Unless someone has something to hide, no harm done.

If you get an interview, I wouldn’t mention that you don’t care for social media. Just don’t bring it up. The world runs on social media nowadays. I don’t use it much either, but I would never denigrate it. It’s reality in 2015.

It is fine to call the HR department to confirm receipt of your resume. It is not fine to call the hiring manager.

However, if you submitted the resume/application through the company’s website, calling is really not necessary.

If you have not had personal contact with them, and they viewed your profile, then they did receive your resume and calling them would not be a good idea.

While this may be the case for some recruiters, I have not found it to be universally true. as a hiring manager, I have hired people with and without linked in profiles. And I have colleagues who are not on LinkedIn and find jobs just fine.

Should I leave it at that?

I wouldn’t read anything in to it. They may have checked LinkedIn to see if you had supplemental information not on your resume. They may have been looking for mutual contacts, or who knows.

It’s hard to wait, but the call for a screening or interview is the real sign of interest.

1 Call asking for a status update or confirmation is fine. Any more than that is pushing it.
I will also add that linked-in is a very necessary tool in the business world. My wife and I do not have facebook and we generally detest social media (with the exception of instagram and linked-in) Linked-in is a must in the business climate once you get to a certain level of job you are applying for. Not only can they see your business experience but you can also view what they and the company are doing and who they network with. Priceless information in the business world.
