Question for LDS "Do you Marry the dead?"

Mormons: “sacrament” is a translation of the Latin sacramentum, which refers to the act of consecration, or something/someone that has been consecrated. Sacramentum is a translation of the original Greek “mysterion”. We also call the sacraments of the Catholic Church, “Holy Mysteries” ( a more ancient name).

Sanctus, which is translated into English “Holy” is also rooted in the same ideas and understandings of sacrament. The understanding of mystery, holiness and grace being paramount to understanding our Holy Mysteries.

Well, I’m ready to sign off this thread. I think that it’s a matter of faith since there’s not much known about the sociality that exists in the afterlife. But, as always, you guys really help me to think things out. Thanks!
 
You are welcome…and note, as Rebecca says, Mormonism is drawing on the Latin and Catholic use of sacramentum…

And we all look forward to communion with one another in the next life with Our Lord – you included!
 
I just shared on another thread recalling John Paul II’s funeral…how the breeze was going in one direction through the Sacred Scripture kept close by at the altar at the Vatican…the podium over the spot where St. Peter died…

And how at the end of the funeral, the breeze finally closed the book with a decisive turn, never to open again…a finality…the chapter of JP’s pontificate now at close.

Memories like that some how take the edge off how Mormons baptize the dead…for us, our funeral and burial is the end of this life, and the beginning of a new life in Christ.

If we honestly believe that baptism is irrevocable and sacred, then this emphasizes how insignificant the fact theat Mormons do this is. For us merely the act of re-baptism is already sacrilegous. For Mormons, though many donot realize it, when the members have not been doing enough genealogy work to provide enough names to keep the temples going, but they have a lot of people showing up to do work for the dead (since the only way they can renew the very complex experience is doing the work on behalf of others) they just do the work over again for names that have already been used. This is normal practice.

What if we all started offering masses for Jospeh Smith, Jr., Brigham Young, etc.? Maybe we should start with Gordon B. Hinclkley and work our way backwards. 👍
 
There is a movement beginning to pray for the Mormons…and yes, we should have Masses said for them.
