Kolob is in the mormon scriptures. I have no idea how they could have missed it since the mormon scriptures are studied by the lds every sunday and also during the week for independent study. It is in the book of abraham. It is really strange to hear exmormons complain about not knowing something that was right in front of them the whole time.

3 And the Lord said unto me: These are the governing ones; and the name of the great one is Kolob, because it is near unto me, for I am the Lord thy God: I have set this one to govern all those which belong to the same order as that upon which thou standest.
4 And the Lord said unto me, by the Urim and Thummim, that Kolob was after the manner of the Lord, according to its times and seasons in the revolutions thereof; that one revolution was a day unto the Lord, after his manner of reckoning, it being one thousand years according to the time appointed unto that whereon thou standest. This is the reckoning of the Lord’s time, according to the reckoning of Kolob.
5 And the Lord said unto me: The planet which is the lesser light, lesser than that which is to rule the day, even the night, is above or greater than that upon which thou standest in point of reckoning, for it moveth in order more slow; this is in order because it standeth above the earth upon which thou standest, therefore the reckoning of its time is not so many as to its number of days, and of months, and of years

Boof of Abraham 3
Hi why me, why do you find this strange? There are lots of Christians who study scripture and who miss plenty in the Bible. 😃 Peace

That and I think the Mormons are distancing themselves from the BoA.

Thanks zerinus, do you know why there is this impression by some?

It is clear they no longer feel up to defending the BoA.

Here is just one quote. "“Now where is the Book of Abraham in this?” he asked. “It isn’t. The Book of Abraham is not central to the restored gospel of Christ.”

Isn’t all scripture central to salvation, and worth defending?

Notice this is not an anti mormon website.

First of all, he is not a spokesman for the Church. He is a scholar expressing his own opinion—and not very eloquently, it seems. Secondly, those words should be read in the context of the rest of his speech. I don’t see his speech as “distancing” form the Book of Abraham.

Wishful thinking, disinformation, misrepresentation, and the like.
If you look at the bottom of the page on that website you will see it says: “© 2010 Deseret News Publishing Company”

Isn’t Deseret News owned by the LDS Church?

Why would an oranization operated by the LDS Church, misinterpret, or misinform?

Also, “John Gee, an associate research professor of Egyptology at the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship at BYU.”

BYU is owned by the LDS church right?

Hi zerinus, I read the article and I did not get the sense of distancing from the BoA. As I understand it form my perspective, is that if I am attacked on some of the Catholic doctrines or beliefs, and if I am not learned or proficient enough to defend, then let those who are learned or proficient debate the issue. In addition, if the attack is so left field or insignificant, it sometimes is not even worthy of wasting the time to defend the accusation. this is just my perspective of the article. Is this the spirit of the article? Peace

Thats ok, you interpret it your way, and the rest of the world will interpret their way.

BTW, I have read the article, in context, and it is clear when he says “The Book of Abraham is not central to the restored gospel of Christ.”

I ask again, isn’t all scripture worth defending?

You sound paranoid! Deseret News is a newspaper, and reports whatever is in the news. It doesn’t mean that whatever is in there is endorsed by the Church. BYU is a university, and like all universities operates on the basis of respecting diversity of opinions. Everything that is taught in there is not endorsed by the Church.

More or less yes. I think you got that about right.

All scripture is worth defending. Those were his words, not the official teaching of the Church; and they probably came out wrong. I don’t think he was trying to denigrate the Book of Abraham. If he was, then he would have been wrong, and and was not speaking for the Church.

LOL, don’t try to pull the wool over anyone’s eyes.

How many people has BYU gotten rid of because they talked about something that made the LDS look wrong or bad? Come on now, you can do better than that.

LOL, you don’t think Deseret isn’t under the thumb of lds inc? You’re more naive than I thought.

But you keep telling yourself all of this. As long as you believe it, that is all that matters.
