Question for Mormons: Explain your practice of 'sealing' the departed?

St. Damien of Hawaii was sealed to a woman after he died. Maybe she was dead too.

As a former VERY devout Mormon, I never ever heard this or was taught this.

Not even the idea of “sealing” those who had died to each other, as is practice in today’s LDS temples, was taught to me was done in ancient times.

I don’t think it was ever explicitly taught to me, either. Given that I was taught that the ordinance of sealings are as old as Adam and Eve, I always assumed the early Church was posthumously baptizing and sealing people.

Once I got to college and took a few classes on religion which were required for a general education requirement, I learned that there’s really no evidence of the concept of eternal marriage before Emanuel Swedenborg in the early 18th century. I don’t believe the Swedenborgians were posthumously performing eternal marriages, though. That’s likely one of Joseph Smith’s novelties.

While this may not fit the religion motif, such an event actually happened very recently.

A young woman was sadly killed in an auto accident in Thailand. Her mourning boyfriend, regretting their plans to marry were cut short, conducted a joint wedding and funeral for his love. The event was posted through Facebook and media circles.
