Hi to the Muslims & Muslimas here 👋

I pass by two mosques everyday on my way to work. One of them has a flag just inside the gate near the road and on the top of the flag pole is metal statue of a human hand coming out of a cresent moon. My question is what does the statue of the human hand coming out of the cresent moon represent?

I do like to get my information about other Faiths straight from the source, so I request that only Muslims answer the question and then after it’s answered people of all Faiths are welcome join in any discussion created by the Muslims’ answers.

Hi 🙂

It’s poetic in a sense. The crescent moon is our symbol because it represents a new beginning and that’s more or less what Muhammad’s ministry was. I don’t know why that symbol would have a hand next to it, though. That’s seems rather odd.

We always look for the new moon when determining the start/end of our holy months, like Ramadan, which is the one where we fast, and Dhul-Hijjah, which is the month in which the Hajj pilgrimage is made (for those who are able to).

New Beginnings - I like it!

The hand is not next to the moon, but coming out of it with the thumb on the right side.

It’s at the Masjid Al-Fatimah. Can you tell from their website if it’s Sunni, Shia or another form of Islam? www.alfatimah.org

It mentions on their site that it is a Shia Masjid.
To provide the Shia community of Sacramento with timely updates on community news and religious events such as majalis, jashns, Thursday night prayers, Friday prayer, Eid celebrations and other special services.

I missed that. I did send a question on the web site and have already received the response that the Hand represents Mohammed & 4 member of his family. They said it symbolizes that they follow Mohammed’s family, not Mohammed’s friends all the Sunni do.

I’d be wary of that attitude if I were you.

I’ve known a lot of people believe utter nonsense about religions because of that attitude. Especially non-Catholics believing drivel about Catholicism because of what a ‘Catholic’ told them.

This is a strange comment that your making, saying that it’s not advisible to learn about Catholicism from a Catholic, but it’s better to learn about Catholicism from a non-Catholic. I don’t agree. I think going outside a religion to learn about that religion is a recipe for getting inaccurate or incomplete information and misunderstanding.

That’s not what I said.

Please don’t accuse people of saying things that they did not say.

Thanks conservative.

And apologies 1tim215mommy (daft name) for not really being clear.

You can’t just have the attitude that because someone from a (for example) Islam told you something about Islam that it is automatically correct. I have known countless (and I really mean countless, that is not a figure of speech) examples where people have ended up believing untruths about religions because of that attitude.

Islam is as divers as Christianity is as diverse as Buddhism and you will get opposing arguments.

Find out things from varying sources.

You are being placed on my Ignore List for two reasons, you’re need to personally attack and your persistence on remaining off-topic.

Muslims have already responded, so you’re welcome to comment here on why you agree or disagree with the information they’ve provided.

If you wish to remain off topic and continue to discuss about how you feel it’s much better it is to get information on a religion from a different source than that religion please start a different thread.

I’ve already asked you not to accuse people of saying things that they haven’t said.

Judging by your writing it seems that your first language is not English and possibly this is a reason for your lack of understanding what I have read.

Regarding your spitting your dummy out of your pram, I think you need to grow up and calm down.

Please point out to me where I have personally attacked anyone.

You are the one who is personally attacking.

You will definitely go on my ignore list.
